fire extinguisher

I am going to be putting my 930 on the track for some local DE's and and wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the different types of fire extinguishers out there?

I am not looking for a full blown system at all, a simple 2.5 or 5lb. hand held will be fine.

I know our host sells the H3R stuff and am wondering what is recommended?

The MaxOut system seems to be a lot cheaper, but am wondering if it is not recommended for an engine fire, something where the powder could get into the motor??? I have a Halotron on my previous 911 because that was what was recommended to me.

I would like to hear the suggestions on this.......thanks.

When I bought my 2.5-pound halon extinguisher from the local pro supplier--not a hardware store--who supplies the EMS unit where I volunteer, as well as all the local volunteer fire departments, they said, "Ya know, an extinguisher this size might put out a brake fire, but that's about all I'd depend on it for." So I don't know if it really matters, if you're buying one of the little in-cockpit bottles--other than to meet the PCA region regs.

Stephan's right...those handheld units are just to delay/hopefully hold things off until the big boys get there.

Powder works better in the wind than halon/gas-based extinguishers but the powder makes a massive mess and sucks to clean up after. Then again so does a toasted car.

Love to find a US supplier of the Sparco Fire Eater.
Seems to be a Euro purchase only - link

I'd buy a bunch of them if someone would import them.

I saw in another thread that someone bought the Fireeater from Sparco. That looks like a good unti.

As for the 2.5lb units, I agree. The hope is that you never ever need to use it. However, if you do, then hopefully it is on the track where it can slow the fire down while the bigger stuff shows up.....

Now I remember why I went with the Halotron before... less clean up if ever needed.

I thought the purpose of the fire extinguisher was to put yourself out, not the car.

porschenut: "I thought the purpose of the fire extinguisher was to put yourself out, not the car."

When my Formula Ford virtually exploded and caught fire in an 80mph sweeper at Holtville in 1973, I stopped the car got out, ran around back to get the extinguisher and save my car. When I noticed I was on fire from hip to toe, I lost all interest in the car.

Friends & neighbors, I want you all to know, it is extremely difficult to drop & roll when you're on fire.

Since these tubs we drive are so big, you might consider one of each, dry chem & halon (or whatever the latest inert gas is). If you're going to DE, make sure you can reach something from where you sit and it won't "sprong" loose in an impact.
