Troubleshooting Methodology - Turn Signals
I've posted this issue with my car before [maybe a year or so ago]. I would like some methodology suggestion for what to check/measure to see where my problem originates.
My turn signals and emergency flasher don't work. I've replaced both the turn signal switch as well as the flasher relay [twice]. So, they apparently are not the prob. I've checked the grounds in two places in the trunk; by the battery and by the brake booster. Fuses are all good. On the flasher or turn signal fuses, other items protected by these fuses are good and functional; like #5 from the cockpit where the central locking is paired with the emergency flasher and #11 where the instruments and backup lights which are paired with the emergency flasher relay. I can turn on the parking lights by flipping the turn signal stalk when the car is off. I'm no competent mechanic, but wanted to see if anyone knows of something immediate I ought to look at before I take it to a shop. thanks :) todd 89 Targa |
check and see if your emergency flasher wires are all plugged in the rear of push button switch. also look under your dash above your left knee and see if your turn signal stalk harness is plugged in.

Get a wiring diagram and start looking for voltage at all nodes along the path. I would start downstream of the fuse and verify 12v. Then the bulb holder, then start looking everywhere inbetween.

Since your emergency flashers don't work I would start at the flasher with your voltmeter (easy to get to). The red/wht wire should have 12 volts on it with the emergency flashers on. |
Do the dashboard arrows light up even though the lamps outside the car wont?

Negative on the dash indicators, nothing. There's no issue with any other stalk function. The turn signals did work when I bought the car in 07 and then went intermittent and now nothing for the past 9 or so months. odd? The flasher switch was replaced too with a known good used one and no effect. I have a Bentley, but haven't been able to find it for about a year now :( Even if I could locate it, I'm probably not a wiring diagram reader.
