the tear down has began...begun....uh whatever
i bought a 3.0 from MCA (craig), thanks again craig. sorry about the CD unit. was that the one without the cover? enjoyed the drive the other day. by the way, if you saw his post about his power concerns on a dyno, i dont think he has much to worry about. he walked away from my 2.7, infact, i think he is about as fast as my brothers 3.2.
anyway, i got the cam tool from Pelican, nice tool. tore it down to the P and C's last night. all but one head bolt on the left side was very tight, and all the bolts on the top row were fairly loose on the right side. the tight ones made a loud crack when first turned. lot of carbon build up, i am afriad that is how my 2.7 looks, although i did puy sea foam in the intake the other day. i am not sure what to do about the pistons and re-ringing. what can i do if i have the alusil cylinders? i am not sure which ones i have. i thought i counted 11 fins on the bottom last week, but when i counted the ones on top last night i counted 10, yea, theres a joke in there somewhere. i had planned on just doing valves and rings this time. now i guess it is time to pull the 2.7 |
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

sorry i wanted to talk about my rebuild and that reading through all the search results is very very time consuming.
perhaps i should just stick to posting "show me your....." or "ultimate...." thread in the TECHNICAL forum moderator, can you delete this post. |
*shrug* clarification: post your Q's in the ER forum and you will get a more targeted and knowledgeable response...
Some say you can re-ring Alusil and get away with it just fine. More pros say no, go get a nice used Malhe set. If you want to take the Ps & Cs off an Alucil engine and re-use them do not remove the P's from the C's so the rings do not get messed up. Not recommended, but if you are just replacing some studs some have done this with good results. You can also tell if it is Alusil if your magnet does not stick to the inner cyl. wall Everything you ever wanted to know about Cs or close to it: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/453063-nikasil-alusil.html?highlight=alusil Everything you ever wanted to know about re-ringing Alucils (29 pages worth!): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/137346-re-ring-alusils.html?highlight=alusil Enjoy! -Michael |

Yes, the CD unit without the cover is the one that failed on me. I was stupid and didn't think to bring the other CD with me so the wife had to come deliver parts and tools to me on the side of the road. At least now I know what happens when a CD fails - very good to know. I highly doubt that you have Alusils in there. I know that there may be a "chance" but I think it is very slim. When do you plan on pulling them? Are you going to replace the head studs while everything is off? I hope that it works out! |
"has begun" is correct.
