Things to bring to DE

Sorry if this was discussed, I tried the search first. I'm attending my first DE. Just wanted to make sure I remember to bring what I need:

Helmet
Stamped Tech sheet
Group listing sheet and schedule
Basic tools

The weather isn't looking to good for tomorrow over here, umbrella is on the list.

anything else?

Murphys law......

If you think you will need it or it could break take it with you brake fluid torque wrench extra tune-up parts plugs cap etc. It's a DE but I have seen a few weekends ruined trying to chase down a two dollar part.

Don, that is a pretty good list.

I would add bringing a spare DME relay, Dist. cap and rotor and fan belt. I always carry these in my car anyway but at the track it is even more important IMHO.
If you have them then you probably won't need them.

It is also important to bring all the required forms.
They are different for each club but here are a few I have had to bring.
Helmet form
Tech inspection form
Health form
Waiver

I usually have a large manila envelope I carry those and my numbers so I keep them together.

If you have adjustable sway bars, bring the tools needed to adjust them.

Need tools at DE?

Mike,

Welcome to your first DE. In case you need tool/s at your next DE, and don't feel uncomfortable borrowing it from other members, simply go to Dougherty's service trailer. Bill or Jim are always willing to assist DE drivers in their desperate moments. Enjoy and share with us your experience. Good luck.

Tony

One great thing about going to the track. If you forget something someone else almost always is willing to share with you. It is really impossible to bring every possible need but usually someone in the paddock has it within reason.

The thing to do is find the sweet spot between on the one hand bringing nothing but a helmet and, on the other, preparing for LeMans. I used to bring stuff like spare brake pads and finally realized it'd be awhile before I drove hard enough to wear out the ones I had. You can always borrow tools; somebody will always be happy to not only lend them but help if you seriously break something.

Particularly if it's your first DE, you're not going to be tweaking swaybar settings and re-timing the distributor, and you're not even going to be doing anything with tire pressures other than making sure they're inflated and then some. You'll have plenty of time down the road to start playing with stuff like that, once you've found your way around the track and simply begun to absorb the basic stuff.

I'd suggest concentrating more on the comfort stuff--sunglasses, sunblock, something to drink, somewhere to sit, a tarp or blanket on which to spread everything out, big trashbags to cover things if it rains, good driving shoes, camera for fun, a carton into which to put all the stuff you remove from the trunk and glovebox, etc. etc. etc. than I would on worrying whether you have enough tools to do an engine drop. You'd be amazed how quickly the time passes between run groups; by the time you've unwound from the first session, it's time to line up for the second one.

Sure, bring a spare quart or two of oil and a funnel, have an extra fanbelt aboard, but stuff like brake fluid is a waste of space unless you have the kind of leak that would get you disqualified at tech anyway. You're _not_ gonna be going fast enough to boil it off. And if you are that fast during your first DE, the talent scouts will be all over you...

The previous points about simple prep are good and I agree with them for your first and second seasons. The above lists that I posted were put together over my previous 7 seasons of DEs and serve mainly as a checklist for me. I obviously over pack. THere is never a problem borrowing tools, jacks, or parts from others.

Just bring oil, brake fluid and personal comfort stuff and you will be fine.

Noel, I did realize that yours was a serious race-prep list, not intended as first-DE advice.
