Top end break in

After a top end rebuild, should one treat the engine in a similar fashion to having a complete rebuild, or is this overkill? I know I should get a valve adjust and oil change in a few miles or so, but should I drive it any differently?

You should drive your car gently for at least 500 miles.
Then do the valve adjust and oil change and all should be good.

The 500 miles is important.

By top end, do you mean new rings? The ring and cam break in (if you refreshed the cams) procedures would need to be followed. As the rings and cylinders get to know each other, they will add metal to the oil. I'd change the oil at 100 and 500. If you just did the heads, drive it normally.

for ring seating you would not use syn oil, and not drive it gentle
A little search and you will see why the "gentle" thing is all wrong

Sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear. Heads off, valve and guides. Basically just a valve job. I know I should do a valve adjust and oil change after some miles, but do I need to baby it or not drive long distances, or drive like normal.

Drive it normally and re-adjust the valves after 500 miles or so.

from my experience the engine will produce great power after a top end refresh since the rest of the engine is already nicely broken in.
