Hawk hp plus brake pads

I did a search and it seems a few people like these pads for mainly DEs and occasional street use. I called a vendor and they said the rears were no longer available, and that most people were using the fronts and OEM rears. Does this sound right?

Its for a 2000# '73 911 with a 3.0 and carrera brakes.

Thanks!

I'm running HP+ in the front with HPS in the rear, so far so good.

Too bad about the HP+, I really liked those for auto-cross/street use..

An alternative would be the Porterhouse R4 (more track) or R4S (more street/auto-cross).

I haven't bought a set in a while but liked them for DE use. I think I got my last set from Tirerack, have you tried them?

Brian,

I think you will be fine like that, a few up here are doing that. The only issue I see with it is the wear differences, you will really have to check them often.

You going to the citrus DE @ RRR in October?

Moi? I have used the R4S pads for street and auto-cross, no track use. They stop and feel very similar to the HP+ pads but seem to squeal and dust slightly more.

I thought BK911 might have been looking for a source for HP+'s. Tirerack website shows them in stock for carrera brakes front and rear.

Thanks guys. I just thought it was odd to use different pads f/r and curious if some salesman was feeding me BS.

Donnie, I am hoping to go to Roebling. I just got back from Sebring and the car ran awesome. Too well in fact, because I have to put a roll bar, seats and harnesses before I go to the track again. Safety first!

The fellow I spoke to at Hawk says the HP+ at 100 f to 800 f to be replaced, and recommended Hawk DTC 30 at 100 f to 1200 f versus HP +. HT 10 are a more aggressive option at 300 f to 1300 f.

For whatever it's worth...

I've found street/track pad, to be a false economy if doing track days. I can burn up a set of HP+ pads in a weekend. On the other hand, a set of PF97s will last all season (25 to 30 days). I used to swap them out for street pads. But since the cars isn't driven a lot on the street, I simply leave the PF97s on all the time.

What is the down side or what is it like driving the 97's on the street?

  • Squealing noise when stopping.
  • Pad "knock back" sounds when turning.
  • A bit more rotor wear than with street pads.
  • Most importantly, high-speed panic stops are non-linear. (Exactly like what happens when you brake hard, on cold brakes, on the track. The tires lock up.)

I have to think that Hawk is reacting to market demand. Most people I know that tried using the HP+ as a combo street/track pad discovered that it did neither well. Lots of noise on the street, marginal for intermediate track use and useless for serious track duty. I can cook them in 20 minutes on the track.

Frankly, it's so easy to change pads in a 911, why not just have 2 sets of pads? HPS for street, Blue or HT-10 for track. And don't forget a good high temp brake fluid.
