Newbie Question / Problem

I am the proud new owner of my first Porsche, a 1982 Targa. SO far I am really enjoying the car. There is one thing about the car that really annoys me, that is the buzzing sound coming from under the hood. It is very loud, almost sounds like an old seat belt buzzer. It seems to be coming from inside a trap door just above the spare tire well. I assume it is the fuel pump, but I'm not sure. Is there any way for me to get rid of this buzzing? :mad: Surely they didn't make that much noise when they were new.

Now for my first "serious issue". Today I noticed the car was making a strange noise from the engine compartment, when I raised the deck lid I noticed that the fan belt was very loose. After closer inspection / disassembly, here is what I found: The outer pulley half has dug a groove into the shaft that is attached to the fan, so now the outer pulley half doesn't spin "true", it is off center.

It looks like the shaft attached to the fan (I guess you would call it "inner" pulley half) is riveted to the fan. I searched Pelican but cant seem to find either of the pulley halves for an 1982 SC. Please tell me I don't need a new fan! :confused: Any help anyone? Thank in advance!

The buzzing could be the AC blower fan - that one can start a fire if it hasn't been fused I think. If it's the fuel pump, you might need a new one. They should be fairly quiet.

You can JB-weld the groove in the shaft, and then carefully sand / file the repair flush (it's in one of the up-fixin' books). Then tighten the pulley & belt properly. You need 6 shims - use all 6. What you don't use between the pulley halves needs to go under the spacer on the outside. Tighten the nut some, then rotate the pulley some, then tighten the nut some more.

Thank you for the replys, which book are you talking about? I have the 101 book on the way. It should be here tomorrow. The way the outer pulley is worn, it seems that even if I JB welded the shaft, the outer pulley would just dig into it again. Where can I get the outer pulley?

part # 930-106-209-02-m260 is the factory part #for the pully / our host sells it and also a few after market ones. u need the bently service manual and ben watsons How to tune and modify cis.

The trap door you described is referred to as the smugglers box. If your car has AC the evaporator and fan are located there and that fan could be the source of your noise.

The fan without the fuse that burgermeister is referring to is the condensor fan in the front of the trunk near the battery. At least on a Carrera, not sure if the SC's have the same front condensor & fan.

Does the buzzing sound louder if you stick you head under the front of the car while running?

Just make sure the hand brake is on first.

It could also be the fuel pump rubber insulating pads slipped off or the need to be replaced.

If not, check the door buzzer relay, it is behind the dash near the speedometer, sometime they are known to just start buzzing away.

Buzzing sound is from the fuel pump underneath the steering rack. You can pull the fuel pump relay and if the sound goes away, it's time to replace the fuel pump before it dies on you leaving you stranded, and cursing , and posting on this board "My Car Just Died".

You will need to remove a steel plate in order to see the fuel pump.

Mine has been making a slight buzzing noise for the last 6,000 miles...

I finally figured out how to properly adjust and shim my fan belt.

It was definitely no fun turning the engine over by hand, to do other maintenance tasks with A loose belt!

I actually greased up the outer shims to get them buggers to stay in place!

Next time you need to adjust the fan belt, use some scotch tape to hold the shims together.

Use something, thats for sure!
