Wow, talk about 'cold flow' and rubbing torsion bars!!!
A bearing replacement turned into a bushing replacement turned into a ball joint replacement turned into a caliper rebuilding....
Anyways how about this! Torsion bar rubbed quite a bit. As soon as the wedge pin lets me have my way i'm sure i'll find the same on the other side. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235318813.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235318829.jpg Other bits and pieces.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235318855.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235318874.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235318901.jpg How i can do this in February... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235318933.jpg What i'm really supposed to be finishing up so i can ride this spring... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235318976.jpg |
I had a similar bushing. Out of curiosity, which side? Mine was passenger & the driver side was barely deformed.
Looks like it's time for a new torsion bar. Or two. Ian |
Passenger side. Wonder why that would be Ian?
|
Also interesting to note is that the other bushings are not visibly deformed. Apparently very little weight put on that end. I'm actually wondering if it makes sense to replace the front busings at all.
|
Mine sound identical. Only one really needed doing. Why? I don't know. You would think that the weight distribution is very equal.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235328067.jpg I replaced them with ER PB without any sacrifice in ride etc. They are Porsche jewelry. Ian |
The rear bushing carries almost the entire vertical load of the car. The front bushing just holds the front of the A-arm in place during braking.
Berettafan, I thought your car was black. In the pic above, looks like a really dark metallic green - very cool with the chrome trim! |
OK but the puzzler is: Why does it seem to squash the passenger side rear bushing more? Or was it just a coincidence? I think I have seen other guy's pics with similar results but I may be crazy too.

Pulled the driver side and it is equally bad. Looking forward to driving it when back together.
Burger yes it is a metallic green. Agree it does look sharp w/ the brightwork. |

It's on the short list for the spring. I am going to attempt tripoding.

Mine were squished eccentric pretty equally side-to-side.

This was a common problem in early 911 production. They had to use corner scales to resolve the problem at the factory. To further explain what this means is that two torsion bars could be set at a higher rate than the other two and if the were on opposite corners of the car it was possible for the car to sit level even though the torsion bars were incorrectly adjusted. You'd only know something was wrong when you drove the car. Left turns could be fine but try and turn right and the car would nose dive. Sound scarry...lol. |
Wow!
Have a client with corner balance scales and have started the search for adjustable rear plates so i can get it righteous! Whileyou'reinthereitis strikes again!!! |
Where's a photo of the rest of that bike you are working on?
|
Not much to see right now but as soon as i get off my ass and source a 20x1.2 c-clip she's going back together.
