front wing removal

hello to all members
I will need to remove my driver's front wing (right hand drive) as I need to lead fill a small rust hole right at the front of the arch. To be able to do a proper job the wing will need to come right off.
Can any members please advise me as to what else apart from the wing will need to be removed, ie bumper and other bits etc.
Im hoping to limit removal of components but if they have to come off also, then be it.

Your help would be most appreciated. Thanks very much

in order to pull the wing it is easier to remove bumper as the front smile is connected to the front of the wing and removing or sliding bumper forward helps to get to these screws remove head light and wiring, unbolt the screws between the fender and impact filler, and you will need to carefully pull up the weather strip along the fender to body seam.

hope this helps

cheers ed

Much easier with bumper off as suggested.

Don't forget you will need the dum-dum to go between the wing and body when you re-install.

Porsche # 000 043 129 00 One roll should do 2 front wings.

Good luck with your project.

Cooper

Years ago I saw a body man using a putty to install the front wings. Is this an option or is dum dum the way to go? Also... Do you have a pic of the dum dum installed on the body before the wing is installed?

Hi SC_RUFCTR,

Porsche uses the dum dum on all of the 911 wings. It acts as a seam sealer to keep water from running between the wing and body. (Also a spacer/vibration damper I assume).

If you don't want to use the Porsche stuff I would reccomend 3M Strip Caulk.

(Don't confuse with 3M Buytl Tape 'window weld' for window glass)

When I did my wings I applied it to the wing. In some areas I found that layering it helped make a better seal.

This stuff never dries or fully hardens.

The Porsche stuff is kind of like a loooong strip of chewing gum. Probably a couple of centimeters wide and 2-3mm thick on a 5meter roll.

It goes along the length of the fender as well as vertically along the back edge where it bolts to the 'A' pillar.

Cheers, Cooper

Thanks for the reply.

In the Hanyes restoration manual they use a strip that looks kinda solid. Like a white tape but thicker. I guess that's the Porsche tape.

So would you put a piece on the car and another on the fender? (two total)

You only need one piece. (Extra pic just for clarification)

I installed it just on the wing for simplicities sake.

I did the double layer bit from the end closeset to the cowl toward the headlight bucket for about half the length. In other words from the cowl to about the top of the strut. I felt that this area on my car could use a little bit more to help with the fitting.
