Mystery oil leak 85 carrera??
Have a oil leak that is hard to diagnose aroun #3 cylider area. Valve cover s clean ad dry and area immediately under them the same. Oil return tubes appear to be dry. Appears that could be running of the forward part of the lefts exhaust pipe forward or from the most forward exhaust bolt hole but difficult to track oil leak on a clean engine. What other leaks should I look for in that area? Thanks JL

Thank you Kodioneill,
Could you enlarge in detail of where to find these leaks and how to repair them, I have no experience with these particular leaks, sealants methods etc, I appreciate the help, Thanks again JL

![]() ![]() the 2nd image is l/s front to back #1,2,3 cylinders. 1st image is from the rear of the same side. the 17mm headed plug is the oil galley plug it has an aluminum washer on it. they often come loose and leak. you should also check the front galley outlet for the tensioners located just in front of the latter. the round plug behind the cam is the cam plug/ freeze out plug not likely a suspect but a potential leak area. as you can see in the photo i use a dab of red thread locker on the fittings.

Forgot to ask you a question If I pull this plug out to put a washer on it, is it below the level where oil will run out or above, thanks again, JL

no, a small amount maybe. when you check the front fittings, use a 19 mm open end wrench and try to turn the fitting under the tensioner oil supply line. if it's loose then hold the fitting with one wrench and remove the banjo bolt with a 19mm.

Started to trade emails with Kodioneill, This man knows his stuff. He advised a rocker shaft may be leaking down the back of the cam tower, how to test for it how to fix the rockers and presto I now have a 174K Carrera that does not have any oil leaks leaks. I am almost afraid to say it. It is nice to deal with someone who wants to help and really gets involved. Guys like this make this forum a great thing! Thanks again Mike JL

Jess, Kodioneill, advised that my leak might be rocker shafts and to inspect them. I removed the valve cover gasket on the lower 123 bank and discovered that the rockers were leaking into the dry area between 1 &2 and 2 & 3 cylinders and running down the back of the cam tower on to the edge of the valve covers making it look like a valve cover leak. Mike advised that the rockers should be sitting very close to flush with the surfaces where the larger boss was. They were protruding which breaks the seal. I loosened the shaft bolts tapped them back in to place and re-torqued the bolts and it solved my leaks. You must be at TDC on the cylinder you are doing the rock on to take pressure of it so it will move, Any questions let me know, JL

Yup, sounds like my "problem".
It's my only leak; if it doesn't leak, how will I know that there's still oil in it? ![]()
