Determination pays off!!
An electrician I am not. But I won! I replaced the coil, CDI unit and still it would not start. I tried everything I could think of Saturday but with no luck.
Sunday I went back to the manuals and started over again. Checked every wiring diagram that I had adjusted or touched. Finally, I went back to the points. They had either slid around or just were horribly out, but what I found was that they were not closing!!! I re-set the gap, made sure the adjustment screw was tightened and checked everything one more time. The car turned over and freaking started!!! Superman once told me that sometimes you just need to press ahead and try something you have never done, well this was a victory for me. I'm still no electrician, but my car is back!!! ![]() ------------------ Mark Isaak '74 Targa [This message has been edited by mark 74 carrera (edited 10-01-2000).] |

Good show, Mark!
I applaud your tenacity, and ultimate success! If your points are shifting on you, I suggest pulling out the distributor, and doing a complete teardown and cleaning, lubing, etc. My experience has been that shifting points gap or mysterious cutout can be caused by a loose tensioning spring/retainer for the ball bearing that keeps the point plate within limits, and poperly tensioned, and free to move under the influence of the vacuum retard diaphram. Assuming you don't have any more problems over the next week or so, you should get a tube of Bosch grease before the distributor cleaning and lube job. Personally, I feel the distributor is one of the more neglected components on the 911 engine, and it is highly critical for a correct running engine! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

congrats, Mark. I know the feeling. Or feelings. Disappointment, frustration, curiosity, hope, fear, alarm.....and then it's fun when the feeling turns to success and victory.
I'd also agree that distributors are neglected and certainly critical components. They don't have to be very far out of spec to make the car run quite poorly. ------------------ '83 SC |
