strap on late model pedal cluster

what's this strap for on the bottom of the pic?

- it's from an SC

- is to reinforce the pedal cluster or something?

are the 4 bolted studs not enough to hold the thing in place??

should I modify my '73 so it can take one of those straps??

I believe that piece is a strut bar that connects the pedal cluster base to the master cylinder. Basically to stabilize the master cylinder from pushing through the fire wall when you get on the brakes. What's missing in the picture is the pushrod from the brake pedal to the master cylinder.

That's a picture of mine from my post showing my pedal cluster rebuild. In that post it was originally in or my photo site detailing my SC rebuild project, there are other pictures that show the fully assembled pedal cluster (pre- and post-rebuild) that show where that long metal strap goes. As aj88cab says, it goes from the brake pedal shaft up to the master cylinder.

I don't think it attaches to the master cylinder, to be specific. It attaches to the the AL housing holding the brake booster and master cyl. or maybe some sheet metal up there... but definitely not the MC. I'll look when I go out at lunch.

If you are putting in a late model brake booster, pedal cluster, and MC you may not need to mod anything there.

You are correct sir! Pretty sure it's that alum base for the booster it attaches to. it was 3:30am, what can I say

Underneath the brake fluid resevoir there are two clear plastic plugs. Remove one of them and you will see where the other end connects to.

ah, so it is to stabilize all the new-fangling brakin' stuff they added....

not to stabilize the pedal cluster itself.

I did my pedal cluster about a year a go and took pics that may help.

Look in this hole. The top of that piece goes inside.

There is a bolt that comes from the outside and connect to the nut welded on the part.

Here is what it looks like with the pedal cluster out. Note the welded nut on top.

It connects to the pedal cluster via an allen bolt.
