Snap-on Stud puller collet
Well, when they are out of stock you need to do what you need to do, nothing with being cheap, but these collets are not that hard to make, just need to cut the reliefs. This is a homemade 6x1.00

Some homes are better equipped than other homes. My home has nothing that will turn out a piece of work like that. I do have lots of band aids.

Evren has the whole set of metric ones...but considering their cost, I've often wondered why somebody hasn't set up a rental on them...I mean, other than a full time pro, how often do you need them?
Great Job of making one!

As you tighten up the collet it clamps down on the threads without damage then you just spin it out.

OK I just needed to see the other end. Looks like a very handy item when working on old stuff.

Hey Craig, wish I had that tool yesterday. Figured that all my extraction tools would do the trick, but as you know those two gave me a hard time. I drilled out one (took me about 3 hours) and it doesnt look pretty, but should still be ok. I think i will install case saver with jb weld just to strengthen it. All others look great though. Luckily the two iffy broken studs are on different cylinders so we shall see. Any thoughts on jb welding a case saver in a not so perfect hole?

Just made the smooth bore 8mm for pulling the dowels. A twist and a pull and they come right out, no damage to the dowel either.

Makes me wonder if a good quality 1/2" drill chuck could twist and pull out solid locating dowels like that. Especially if you heat the head then hold an ice cube on the dowel for a few seconds or more first. |

A 1/2" drill chuck would not distribute the holding/clamping power over the same surface area as Craig's collet setup does. Perhaps the use of some shim stock around the dowel would prevent any marking/marring. However. if I had a choice, the collet would get the nod every time.

Why do you even have to remove the dowels? So you can machine the surface?
