Polishing Fuchs and something is not right with the Caps

I started the process of refinishing my Fuchs. Since this is my first time, I wanted to start small so I decided to remove the caps and start with them first. I stripped all the paint and oddly enough each one has a diifferent finish.

Here is a pic. The one on the top right is what I expected. The one on the bottom right seems to have a coating on it but I can't tell for sure. I am planning on polishing the entire wheel and caps. What should I try next? Also, two of them have holes and the other 2 don't. Which ones are correct for 82 911SC?

One pair is painted, the other looks to be anodized....you can either lightly sand them with 0000 steel wool, or put them on a buffer with jeweler's rouge.

Judging by the picture, two (or more) have been replaced at some point, as one pair has two holes and one pair does not.
As Mikez said, the bottom ones look anodized; the top left may be as well.
Do as Mike indicated, but go lightly - a heavy hand will take away some of the detail from the crests.

When in doubt improvise.

Do all your fuchs have the same diameter opening?

Yes, all have the same size opening.

I also saw post about using Oven Cleaner to remove anodization. Will try this then start polishing.

Actually, no. Early Fuchs, I believe <73 have smaller opening and use a different cap, the three prong cap. Most Fuchs that are traded are of the later, 70mm opening that uses the ring caps like you have. It is always good to ask the seller if you are uncertain.

...The reason I asked is that the cookie cutters I used have different diameters and was wondering if the fuchs had the same issue. To be honest I know little about rims. It's just that it came of a surprise to me that my rims had different openings. I planned on the bore size measurement of one rim, not all rims. I would hate to see someone else make the same mistake.

The question was do "my" fuchs all have the same opening and they do.

Absolutely right, restormcoach. I really should use my glasses when reading the monitor:cool:

in answer to your other question.....technically the ones with the holes are "correct" for your SC....although, I replaced the center caps on my Carrera with caps with inlaid 356 hood crests and no holes....originality is not a big issue with me...the way I see it the factory delivers a canvas for us to use as a base to make something beautiful in our own eyes. Like art...what one person enjoys another cannot stand...go with what makes you happy.

The ones with holes are correct for an SC.

I see no need to remove paint or anodizing from them first. I think you should just paint them the way they are.

My 82 came with bolt on crests on the center caps. I have very detailed receipts for the car including the original sales paperwork. I believe them to be original.
