SWB torsion tube

hi all

First post on here but I've been a long time reader

i'm going to soo have to replace the torsion tube in an old 67 911t due to rust. All I could find on here about it was this.

Catastrophic chassis failure! What now?

Very helpful thread. What I want to know is what car should I look to get a replacement torsion tube out of to replace mine. Will any, both SWB and LWB, pre 76 tube do?? (i think someone mentioned this to me before)

Also does anyone have any idea and or photos of how it ties into the longitudinals at each end. I am undecided as to wheather to replace the centre section as in the thread aboce or else try and replace the entire tube.

All photos and advice appreciated.

You won't be able to weld all the way around the tube if you splice a center section in unless you cut open the rear seat area.

I've got a '66 on my ramp at the house being cut up, its really a rusty tub but I can take pictures of the torsion tube on it both ends and hopefully it will give you some idea. Milt is dead on about getting to the welds you would have to make. For the he** of it I cut a torsion tube up just to see how they were put together, I will see if I can find the picture(s) of what the very center looks like, basically there is an hourglass shaped receiver piece that is factory crimped and the torsion bars slide into either side. I'll try to post picture(s) here this afternoon.
Good luck.

On my '66 I replaced the center section of the torsion tube. To be able to weld all the way around I had to cut openings in the rear seat like Milt said. If you do only the center section I recommend welding the tube in and for extra strenght weld a collar over the seam.

You have to use a swb tube for replacement as the pick up points for the trailing arms are postioned differently on the later cars.

Unfortunately I lost all the pics of the restoration when one of my hard drives failed.

I have a cut out center section of a Carrera tube. Nothing to see; just as described. I doubt very much if that is the part that needs replacing as they are very stout. If there is significant rust, I'll bet it's in the outer portions and the ends.

Ya I knew about that. Might be replacing some of the bulkhead anyway.

No the centre section is ok its on either side between the longitudinals that have rusted. Not sure if i will have enough good metal on one side to weld just a centre section in so might have to tie it into the longitudinal boxes at one end. If i have enough good metal i'll just graft in a section.

Anyone have any photos of the tie in to the longitudinal sections at either end?

Also anyone offer any advice on my first question about what year tube/car i can get one from, that will work in a SWB?? at the moment thats what i'm worried about.

Thanks for the input so far.

Sorry Martijn only saw your reply after i had submitted the post above. so it is only a pre 69 tube so I can use?? some one mentioned to me that anything up to 76 would do except a turbo??

How hard is it to find a pre 69 tube or shell to cut it from??

There's some pics that might help you in this link.

If you haven't seen this site take some time to check it out, amazing work IMO.

A SWB tube shouln't be too hard too find. Check the parts for sale section someone is parting out a whole bunch or early cars.
