Gauge Cluster Fuse
 

I have an 83 SC that I just picked up and I am having a few electrical issues. Mainly the gauges don't light up and the blowers don't blow. I can live with that, but no gauges at night I cant.

I know its a noob question but this fuse box is new to me. Ive checked them all and they are all good but could someone point out which fuse would be for the gauges? Its not marked on the cover guide and I would like to at least start there. Thanks in advance.

Hate to break the news to you (hopefully I am wrong - and if so 50 people will be more than happy to chime in) but there is no fuse for the gauges. Chances are you have a fried or fried wires. I have been recommending for everyone to do this: http://www.dietersmotorsports.com/tech/1998/12-98a.html. as insurance against what you are experiencing.

Pull the gauges and see if you can find any crispy wires and replace. Make sure all the bulb holders are well seated. One askew can create a meltdown somewhere in the harness.

gahhhh thats what I was afraid of. The previous owner said he would hit bumps and they would flicker or go off...Ive yet to even have them on. This makes me think maybe something is loose back there. Well...time to start prying I guess lol.

on the otherhand,..maybe the PO properly fused (modded) the circuit and the blown fuse is waiting to be "found"?

I placed mine ('89) near the ignition switch (behind it)...

..may not be the case for you,..just a thought.,...the "bump" thing makes me think "not".

You may want to check your headlamp switch...it has a built-in cluster dimmer (turn headlamp switch knob to the left and right to dim or brighten your cluster). It may be bad, or just dirty.

Before you start tearing stuff apart, you may want to try to spray some electrical contact spray (or if you're careful, you might use carb cleaner) on the switch. Disconnect the battery, pull on the headlight switch, give it a good spray past the knob post, and repeatedly turn the knob to the left and right.

Repeat this operation a few times, clean up your mess, hook up your battery and try your cluster.
