Thinking about Powdercoating my wheels a shiny black. They are 17 inch cups.

The company Denver Bumper suggested i find out if they are okay to bake at 400 degrees in their oven? Any one able to advise on this?

Hard to tell depending on who's aftermarket replicas they are, but I doubt 400 degrees will hurt. Had my BBS RX wheels refinished, silver was painted, with a powder coat clear over them, and no issues at all.

Just make sure they mask off the lug bolt seat area so no paint or particles bake in there or you'll have a heck of a time getting the seat clean again. Otherwise- bad torque when you install them.

I think they look good now. The powder coating will add more weight. I think the heat should not be a problem since the wheels heat up during heavy breaking but what about the thickness of the power coating interfering with mounting on the wheel hubs?

Urethane powder can cure @ 350F. That's part temperature. If you are looking for a class A finish be sure to specify urethene.

Every bit of weight counts especially on wheels.

If you're Roger Penske
I'd venture to say you'll add less than 1/8lbs. per wheel @ 3 mils.

You would never tell a difference. People kill me with stuff like that. Paint, stickers, powdercoating... none of that will affect real world performance.

Another thing to consider is that since powder coatings are much thicker than normally-applied paint, it could mask cracks or other beginning signs of structural failure.

I love the raw black wheel racer look. Just no shiny lips please. I know OG Fuchs have a silver lip and I still dont like it.

If your that concerned about added weight....wear a T-Shirt, not a pullover.....Oh, and get a haircut....that's about how much difference it will make performance wise!

It shouldn't weigh anymore than the green stickers he removed.

I guess everybody that has powercoated their wheels has replied so my response is ...do what you want you will anyway. I just like to know all of the negatives. The less haging onto the wheels the less rotating mass and the less loss of HP. SO fill them with lead if you want I DON"T CARE!!!

LOL, well, after the old paint is sanded off & the powder weighs less than liquid paint, no problem, plus a good shop will mask the rims up. Of course I've only been having wheels powder coadted for around 20 years for my street & track cars
Currently have a set of 7&9X16 Fuchs (the centers) and a set of Hummer wheels coated

DO IT! But my vote is flat black or semi-flat black. Gloss Black gets dirty very quickly IMHO.

As for 400 F heat... no worries. When I was a powder coater we powder coated wheels day in / day out. If it's aluminum or steel it'll hold up to the heat. Those wheels were casted at over 1000 degrees when they were made.

Good luck and post pics when you're done. I'm about to powder coat a set of CUP2 wheels in a flat grey / gun metal color in the next few weeks.

Porsche Crest

If you haven't coated your wheels yet, I think you should consider gray instead of black.

I just got my Cup II wheels back from the powder coater and tire shop yesterday. I went with a dark metallic gray (anthracite) with clear coat. I'm very pleased with the results.

I'm biased... these are actually 993RS wheels, and I bought them this way.
