It all worked out - New to me '67S
Some of you may have seen my irritatingly persistent WTB posts on the cars for sale bulletin board. I've been searching for an affordable long-hood project for over a year. Given my small budget, I had resigned myself to a beat up roller to restore.
Out of the blue, I got an email from a couple in Louisiana who had a '67S for sale. They were willing to sell it to me for a great deal in the hopes it would go to a good home. My wife and I flew out, bought it and arranged shipping. It took a whole month to find a truck, but it finally arrived yesterday. I can't believe it all worked out. The car hasn't been run in five years. It was flooded for an hour in 14" of water. Nevertheless, the interior is great and I can find only surface rust. The suspension mounting points are solid and the car is almost all original. All numbers match and the engine turns freely! I can't wait to clean her up and start bringing her back to glory. 14" of water would not have done too much damage if it only sat in it for a short time and then dried out perfectly. You probably have extra clean carpets from it too! Just make sure things like your rockers and tunnel did not rot out. Make sure to replace all the brakes and lines and give the chassis and suspension an inspection while you are in there.
Amazing find. |

Thanks for the comments. I think it's a really solid car, certainly worthy of a long-term restoration. I feel very lucky!
I had to remove all the brake pads to get it to roll for shipping. I'll pull the calipers and rebuild as necessary, then replace all fluids and see if she will crank. After that, a project at a time... ![]()

I would pull up & check the carpets carefully.
Also, I'd start "flushing" dry air thru every orifice in the body below 24" - not 14" right away. A fan with ducting or a blower is the way to do that. This sounds good - but only if the couple are rock-solid honest and well-informed on the flooding. The flood was very dirty and toxic - esp. in New Orleans. Rita (SW La.) would have been cleaner but a lot of mirex was in the water - it is a very nasty insecticide and highly persistent. It is used all over the south to kill fire ants. Get Steve W. to check it out for you also. Good Luck - I hope to see it around the state. |

If you paid anything under $40K, this car was an epic deal. It's so complete! Don't you dare do anything undue to that ivory interior!

You are in Portland! You should really, really talk to Tom Fender. He is a '67S barrel of knowledge and can't live more han a few miles from you. PM for his contact info.

You suck, .... I mean... Great Find!!
![]() Seriously, good for you. There's a lot of local NW 67S guys, as mentioned Tom Fender is in the Portland area. You'll have to get it running and bring it to Emory's campout in June. Keep us updated. If you have any specific 67S questions, please feel free to post them, or email/pm me if you like. regards, Eric 6 67S's.....

Eric is a reasonable '67S expert, as well.

Awesome find! Bad news is that 14" of salt water is enough to get into some hidden gaps in the 911s structure (like the rocker panels and inner doors) and feed the tin worms that likely had started eating already.
![]() I would strip out the interior and give the car a good dousing with a power washer, obviously avoiding the dash and electricals. Drill small holes under the areas shown by techweenie in the below thread and pressure wash any areas you have access to. Then use compressed air and then the air ducting method described above to dry things out. See this old thread about another Katrina car: Katrina 1 73.5 911 0? Best of luck...the polo red with ivory interior should be a real beauty when done! Last edited by jkarolyi; 02-22-2008 at 12:53 PM.. |

Wow, I didn't know there were so many "S" experts in the Portland area. I'll certainly be barraging y'all with questions.
The car was in Slidell, an area only briefly flooded by fresh (well, not salt) water. I will strip the car down, get it dried out and let you know what I find. I appreciate all the good advice.

How exactly is that a project? Looks like an oil change, brake flush and some filters/plugs away from a daily driver. Nice score.

That's just getting started on a car that has sat for 5 years. For one, the entire fuel system will need to be gone through including tank boil, new lines, fuel pump, filter, and weber rebuild. Letting these cars sit is the worst thing for them.

Slidell means lake Pontchartrain - the water would have been slightly brackish. That means you are in luck but not free & clear.
Do the air drying stuff above. The real problem will be to find those hidden compartments. Grady mentioned them on a different thread but never documented exactly where they are. I might work on the fuel system then give the motor a try - if it runs you will be in luck. Pull the plugs first and see how easily it turns over. Also check various areas for dead nutria... |
