I am a little biased....but you are talking complete apples and oranges here....if you can get an 87 for that kind of money you can plan on spending quite a bit more....but the same can be said for the SC....you need to decide first if you want a coupe or a targa.....both will need head studs replaced at some point...not to mention valve stem seals....the SC has a 915 trans that has its own set of issues....the 87 has the stronger heavier g50...I can go on and on....If you can spell Carrera you are one up on some of the SC guys....different thread about that one...I have an 87 coupe...love it...have spent a LOT more than it is worth but wont give it up.

What are your plans for this car? What do you want to do with it?
Track car - dedicated or occasional?
Daily (or regular) driver?
Weekend cruiser?
Fair weather or year round driver?
...

I'm also biased.
I would take the SC in a flash but not a Targa though.
Just preference of the coupe.

Have you driven both styles? The difference in transmissions was enough for me.

Best of both worlds would be the 87.

It also depends how you drive...If you like to race around and really get on it, then you will have a tuff time adapting to the 915 transmission. If you like to just dilly dally around town, but love to take it out on the back roads then you will be fine with it.

I have a friend who has a boxster s and he can't drive my 86 worth a damn. I refuse to let him drive it anymore because of the fear that he will destroy my transmission. He drives the hell out of that boxster though.

The 915 shouldn't be a deal breaker if you can get a nice example, but honestly, if I could do it over again I would get an 87 or 88 G50 car. That being said, I love my 86 and it really is not that bad, once you get the hang of the what your transmission will let you get away with.

later,
Craig

That's funny - my last Porsche was an '82SC targa, and my new Porsche is an 88 (mucho similar to '87)...also a targa. I loved my SC... easy to work on, fun to drive. The 915 tranny was fine, I enjoyed learning to drive it. But it really does come down to what you want to do with the car, and how you will maintain it. The SC has the 915 and the CIS, while the 87 has the G50 and Motronic...both more "modern" (notice I didn't say "better"). All the talk about 915 vs G50 on this board and I actually find the bigger difference is the fuel injection. my 88 starts up (so far), rain or shine, hot or cold with one flick of the key...my CIS gave me fits until I got it sorted out. But that's kinda my point. Either car is going to give you issues at some point. The driving "experience" between the two is very similar IMHO, with perhaps the tinyest edge going to the SC. But I didn't want to hassle the CIS nor the 915 rebuild down the road, so I went with the later car...

...I just re-read my post and it sounds pretty darn wishy-washy...I would buy the 87...period...I guess... :-)

I would buy the '87. After it passes a PPI. At $17k it should need very little...

I'd take the '87 because of the more modern engine management. The 915 vs. G50 arguments are just stupid. If you can shift well and don't intend to mod the heck out of the engine for more power it doesn't matter which one you have in my opinion.
