Stranded...Oh well.

Ah man, my water pump or something just blew on my newly purchased 944. Sitting at a stop light looking down at my ipod and kaboom, looked up to bellowing steam coming out from the driver wheel well and water streaming out onto the pavement.

I just replaced all the belts with a brand new Porsche water pump...Oh yeah, I am 300 miles from home.

Oh well, I guess that's what I get for venturing into 20 year old water pumpers.

Later,
Craig

Did you get the car home? Are you sure what broke?

I was visiting my sister, so I have family close by, but I am going to have to figure out how to get it home.

I am not sure what broke, I was in nice close, so I didn't want to jack the car up and lie on the ground. I will look at it tomorrow.

There was half of a round plastic cap that was lying under the front of the car. Not sure if it is a hose or something else. I just bought this thing and I am not familiar with the mechanics yet. Everything looked OK topside, but a a lot of water came out from the bottom.

yessir. probably a hose blew, or a plastic tank. waterpumps aren't explosive like that.

Sounds like your overflow tank....hope the engine didn't get too hot for too long. Although on my 928, it was on the RH side.

I was at idle...I wasn't really paying attention...I hope it didn't get too hot either. The overflow tank looked to be full and intact. I have only had this car for about a month and I know nothing about it.

I had one blow explosively like that once, on a Toyota pickup. The bearing around the shaft failed, and the whole housing around the shaft came apart. Driving down the freeway and Poof, big steam cloud.

Coasted to a gas station where I parked under a streetlight, called a ride and had the old pump removed before they got there. Went to Kragen, got a replacement and was back on the road in about 2 hours. Not much chance of that happening with a 944, I expect.

That being said, it is probably a hose.

Good luck,

Tom

It turned out to be a cracked heater control valve...
Thanks to all.
