According to the Bosch Spec List, neither 040 0r 044 is correct because they have the wrong inlet/outlet sizes.

The size of the inlet and outlet nipples have to match your lines, plus does the pump have an internal or external check valve, plus does it produce enough pressure for your system like ~5 bar?

Most SC's have an inlet of 12 mm (1/2") for the short rubber hose from the tank.
The outlet is usually a banjo fitting for an M12 x 1.5 mm nipple that may contain a check valve or just be an adapter without CV meaning, the pump has an internal CV.

You may have a Pierburg or Bosch with an internal, or external CV, in there now; both makes and types were used by Porsche.
I had a Pierburg with internal CV with correct fittings either end to match my fuel lines.

Lots of info on PP if you do a search but, you don't know what you have until you look at your set-up closely.
Remove the steel protective plate off, take a picture and post it here.

Why not support PP and get this one:

911-608-102-02-M14 Fuel Pump, 911 (1980-83), 911 Turbo (1986-89), front pump
Brand: Bosch [More Info] $333.75

Call PP and ask if this pump has internal or external check valve and if it comes with 2 new copper sealing rings for the banjo fitting.

Hi
The inlet is the main problem.

I used the Walbro GCL604 In-Line Pump Kit on my 82SC and it was 100% plug and play.

GothingNC and JMH82SC:
Walbro sounds interesting but I couldn't find info about check valve on their website.
Is the CV internal or external in the fitting?
Walbro pictures show ano male fitting on the inlet side.
How did you fit the 12 mm (1/2") short hose to the inlet?

The GCL604 part number is the number used to get a Walbro that includes the correct fittings to go into the car. The actual pump has a different number. I found this out the hard way because I thought the retailer sent me the wrong pump and after talking to the tech support I was informed that Walbro does not have a GCL604 pump but rather GCL604 is a kit that includes a pump with the correct fittings for the car. I do not have the pumps part number as it has been over a year and the fuel pump box is long gone. I bring this up because you need the fuel pumps part number to see if it has a internal check valve because the fittings were just that, no external check valve is in the kit.

My alternative fuel pump thread for SC's:

Interchangablility of Fuel Pumps

I have had the 909 pump in the car for over 1000 miles with no issues as yet. While I try to support our host as much as possible, I bought this pump at the FLAPS and saved 50%... *shrug*

Oh yeah, while you are in there changing the pump, change that 3" piece of rotten fuel hose from the tank to the pump. You wont regret doing that :P

Michael:
909 sounds good.
Does it have an internal check valve?
Or was the CV in the external nipple?

I'm pretty sure that the extra knob on the down stream side of the pump was the check valve. It was a direct replacement to what I can only assume was my original pump. My old pump had the same kind of extra knob on the down stream side. I have saved the old stuff if you all want a pic of it. Saving stuff like that is an issue I should be in therapy for
