I'm having a lot of problems with the server speed from here in SoCal. However, I think it might be related to my DSL connections, and not the server. I had John Dunkle (Rennlist owner) check the speed yesterday from New Hampshire, and he said it was blazingly fast. At the same time I was on the phone with him, I couldn't get crap to load up on my screen = very slow.
So, fast to New Hampshire (3000 miles), slow to El Segundo (3 miles). I'm trying to trace this problem down. I'm having it from my home DSL account as well. The home page loads quickly, but then the images are slow to load. For instance on the recent OCR concours page, it would load instantly, and then take about 2-3 minutes to load all of the images. For those of you on a direct DSL or T1 account (not modems), can you tell me how the server response looks to you? The server CPU load is very low when I'm having these problems, so I doubt it's a machine problem. Feels like a connection problem, although running a tracert reveals nothing. Is it fast for everyone else? Please let me know... -Wayne |

Very fast for me on my T1 connection at work, and on my cable modem at home.

Today it is moving along very fast. All the pictures load up just as fast as i can scroll down to see them. So no problems here. 768k dsl line.

Not so slow that you needed to get rid of the SEARCH tool. DSL has its drawbacks, ask me how I know...

I miss the Search function as well. I used it more than the BBS itself. Saves tons of time and clogging up the BBS with redundant postings.
Hope you find the problem! Thanks again for this incredible resource! Nick. ------------------ _ _ __ _ _ Nick Shumaker 1982 911SC Coupe nickshu@yahoo.com PCA -- Rocky Mtn. Region |

Wayne,
I am logging on with an antique 56k modem and the server is working fine from my end. Bill Carcot 1979 911SC Diablo Region, P.C.A. |

With the connections that I have been using, it seems at times that the page doesn't want to load at all and other times it is extremely fast. The connections I am using are 300K Cable modem and a T3. Sometimes also, it will load fast and when I am going from post to post, it slows up a lot, then speeds up again. I might try to put a little more effort into finding out when it is slow and possibly find something to help determine the clog.

Wayne, from home in Illinois with a 56k modem I recently am having problems sometimes even getting a connection to your server. And then pages sporadically load slowly - it is not predictable by time of day or content requested (I have ruled out images loading as a reason). I know you were most interested in hearing from those with broadband but I can tell you that this problem is separate from the speed of my dial up access.
A tracert just now shows the biggest delays coming from the sprintlink.net connection - I suppose that this is the backbone. I did not have any problems connecting this morning though. ------------------ Rod Walter '88 911 coupe |

Wayne,
I'm seeing symptoms like Paul Hagelhorn describes - page loads vary between rocket rapid and longish [15-20 second] delays before loading. The delay appears to hit between the request and the service. Once the page is served, it loads very quickly. Good hunting, Tony K |

Unfortunately, the Sprintlink is on your end. We're on a PacBell backbone here...

yesterday morning there seemed to be a server not found error 404 from east coast. Today the pages load normally, fast for me from t1 based office. For you location, I would check with the DSL provider's gateway. Could be your source of problem. Thanks for all you've done with the web site. It is truly a wonderful resource. The new load image function is great for us to drool over other posters cars. John 79 930 Pelican Customer to boot |

It is usually fast for me. Sometimes the 944 Tech forum runs a lot slower than this one.

Fast on DSL. A little slow on 56K. However, on some occations over the past 3 or 4 days I receive an error message that the server cannot be located. |

Very intermittent connectivity and throughput for me as well. The way it behaves, I suspect Wayne is correct about network backbone issues being the culprit.
Regarding the Search and other functions...one approach would be to split the main "e-commerce" (catalog/ordering) site, tech info and BBS's, and search/other stuff onto different boxes. A bit more complex and expensive, but a lot more scalable and robust. Also, I'm not sure how the UBB search function works, but I bet it could be greatly optimized so it's not such a resource pig. It may just be doing a brute force Perl regular expression search of the site content over and over, as opposed to using an index or content cache.
