Carrea Blinker problem..I did a search

		Hi Guys,
'85 911 Coupe. I replaced my blinker relay some months back so when they went out again I replaced it again to no avail. My emergency flashers work fine but neither directional blinks nor is there any indication on the panel gauge. Nothing flashes at all. I suspect the stalk but am hoping it's something else. Ideas? Scott,
I have an 86 Carrera with a related problem....my blinker comes on but does not flash with the key off. Annoying but not serious. I'm working this weekend but will tackle during the week. I'll take a look while I'm in the wiring and diagrams and try to give you some help. Generally I'm pretty good at this stuff...Uncle Sam and my mom paid a lot of money to educate me in the operation of electrons. If you fix it before then let me know... I should be back to you with a preliminary assessment by tomorrow. Gordon |

 Thanks Gordon,
I'm the guy with a fork and a piece of toast stuck in the toaster. Thanks, Scxott |

 gamatt......
The blinker coming on and not flashing (this is with key off) is a normal function on a 911 since as far back as I can remember. |

It's a Euro thing for keeping the street side lamps on when engine is off and parked on a tight street. You move the lever from center to up/down and lamps stay lit with engine and key off.
otherwise I'd clean the bulkhead connectors and widen the pins a little with a razor blade. The plugs that are above the pedals. |

 No guys,
I'm familiar with the Euro markers coming on when parked and stalk moved to one side or other. I get no blinkers internal/external w/the engine running. Checked the fuse and the relay. Nothing. Thanks for the suggestions, Scott |

 possibly the hazard switch itself.
	 |

I agree with the hazard switch being the culprit. I suspect that the hazard switch is not fully shutting down, and this precludes the turn signal from normal operations. If the hazard works OK when on, it is not your lamps or likely even your relays, but the hazard switch.

Really....my hazards work great but may be precluding the blinker operation?
This makes a certain amount of sense. My hazard button/switch has been loose and I've messed with it to try and tighten it. Maybe I've crossed some wires back there. Suggestions? Thanks, Scott |

		OK,
I have no reason to doubt anyone on the no-blinky-turn light -on -with-the -key-off syndrom. But it makes no sense. None of my VW's or my 914 do this. I'm wondering what the plan was to keep you from killing the battery? Scott, I'm still on the job reference your issue... Gordon |

Mercedes and bmw had the parking light also. i think it would take a long time to kill the battery with just two small bulbs burning.

		Scott,
Here's what I know...page 970-64, Bentley service manual. Ifin' you don't have one, get one... 1. The turn signals are wired so that with the key off they will light the turn signal bulbs, without blinking, in either direction the turn signal lever is in. (go figure) 2. The turn signals and the emergency flashers share the same flasher unit. 3. The fact that your emergency flashers work would rule out a bad flasher relay. the emergency flasher switch over-rides the turn signal switch to operate all four corners of the car at once. 4. Checks: Check fuse 8. This is the power supply to the turn signals. Make sure you have power to the relay. Check to make sure the turn signal light comes on without blinking with the key off. |

The emergency flasher switch over-rides the turn signal switch to operate all four corners of the car at once. 4. Preliminary Checks (there could be more if no fault is found): a. Check fuse 8. This is the power supply to the turn signals. Make sure you have power to pin 49 (Red/White wire) of the Emergency Flasher Switch. Fuse 8 should only be hot with the key on. b. Check to make sure the turn signal light comes on by operating the column switch in both directions with the key off. the corner lights should come on but not blink. c. Check the Black/White/Green (pin 48A) wire from the flasher to the emergency flasher switch to the steering column switch with a test light. Turn the key on and the signals on, either direction, and see if the test light flashes. Your column switch is simply providing a ground for the flasher relay through the turn signal bulbs and this is what operates the flasher. If there is power to the flasher (fuse 8) and a ground through the bulb, the turn signals will work. One would suspect that there must be a common fault high in the circuit if none of the four corners of the car work during this test. d. If everything looks good, then you may have a bad set of contacts in the steering colum switch, or a bad connection of the wire (Black/white/green) going between the switch and the relay. Porsches are great cars but their wiring sucks. Good luck. You can Yahoo me for more help, or I'll send you my phone number. Gordon |

 Thanks Gamatt,
Will give this a try and report back! I have Bentley's but it's in storage at the moment. Regards, Scott |

Had the same problem with my 74. Replaced the turnsignal switch and fixed the problem.

 Thanks Guys

		Thanks again guys.
I'm moving this weekend and will tackle this ASAP. As it is I fit right in with the Non Blinker Using A-hole Porsche Drivers here in L.A.:D I hate it! I'll report back with results. Scott |

A bad ground in the light assembly can cause some strange effects.

The blinker ON with the ignition OFF is a very GOOD safety thing used in Europe, specially useful when parking (European) in the narrow streets at night !!!!!!!!!!!! I find it useful even here in the USA. Most drivers in this country are yet to discover they have blinker lights as accessory on their AUTO. Most DO NOT use them ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!except 911 drivers of course !!!

		Scott,
Any update? I always follow-up so i can bank the fixes! never know when the gremlins will get my car.... Gordon |

 gamatt,
I've only had time for trouble shooting. The night light markers work. If I place the stalk in one direction or another the appropriate lights stay on when parked at night. I will track down the green/white ground wire to confirm continuity though this stretches my electrical aptitude past actual knowledge and ability, I may end up replacing the entire stalk though the above restrictions still apply. Thanks for the follow up I'll keep you apprised. Scott |

 Hi all
New to the board with my first 911. My blinkers also don't work, but neither do the emergency flashers. Does this rule out the stalk? Fuse is good. Don't have the Bentley's (yet), and wanted to check the boards before I give in and take it to a shop. Weather here is getting too nice to have inside. Thanks Chris |
