Thanks Kodioneill and Ronin.

I will look into both options. I have made a habit of looking at the gauges but according to a lot of people (including Wayne) considerable damage can happen within minutes of losing the belt. Also I understand that the head and cylinder temperature can rise a lot faster than the engine oil temperature (and gauge reading).
Seems to me that the small cost of either option would be worth investing in.
Perhaps I am too conservative.

a while back i remember some people were selling these little buzzers for the cars that did not buzz when you left the lights on when you shut off the ignition - kind of a battery drain warning. these were cheap, maybe you can find one of these.

I suggest getting one of those electronic dog collars that send an electrical jolt to your neck muscles - rewire it to be triggered by a temperature exceedance and you are ALL SET.
