Tire dates
Hi
I'm going to check a tire shop for manafacture dates but my question is how old of a tire is too old , if the tire is stored properly what would be to old to buy, 1 year 2 year??? Feed back please. 87 930 71 E type Jag 12 banger 56 GMC V8 , all stock 80 El Camino, daily driver 89 Van Dieman , Formula Ford 07 Civic " the Warden's" |
I've heard 7 years. Others will have different numbers, I'm sure.

I've heard 5.

I was told one time that Goodyear doesn't like to sell anything over three years old. And I can tell you we see big (1/2 a second on mile and a half tracks) differences in just 6 month old tires.
We also store all the unused race tires on wooden pallets in climate controlled units. How many tire stores do that? |
I was thinking about this very subject recently. If a tire has "safe use" life of say 7 years and you find a set that was manufactured 1 or 2 years ago, should you not get a discount on the price? This is probably why the tire industry won't say what the exact timeline is for a set of tires.
I am not an expert on tires, but I would think that a tires "useful life" would start once they are mounted on a car. |
5 to 6 years old max is what I have been told.

After watching that video, I am surprise in the report they didn't bring up the point I mentioned. That is, if the tire is not New, meaning it only has 3 years left before it "expires", then should you not get a discount. Unless the government gets involved, you will never see the tire industry own up to this. They would lose some much money.
