camping mat (sleeping pad) -- used to be a foam called ensolite
you want to try and find the kind that is pretty flexible note that there are foams that are somewhat fire retardent or 'safe' - not sure which to really save wt., you will need to use FG or CF panels for steel on the bumper, deck lid, & etc. one approach: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=273740&highlight=yet+an other+rgruppe+boring of course, there is no need to add excess wt. back there in the cabin! |
Looking at carpet pads right now, some have antimicrobial additives and moisture barriers. This sounds ideal for the rear seat area, which is known to collect water. Plus it's lightweight and adhesive-backed.

- No one has discovered the definitive material for what you want yet. I would look at the general aviation community for info... also - it would be fun to find out what is being used in new Lotus (Lotusi?), the Txx Lotus based all elec. sports car, Porsche & Fcars. Surely, they have come up with something groovey. an aerogel would be best, but AFAIK you will have to scavenge that from NASA, Lockhead, etc. |

sure - we all have somewhat different goals for our cars
and certainly not damaging an infant's sensitive hearing is a very very high priority but my point is that RS carpet over Dynamat is not a light wt. solution. |

I''ve got this to do and having done a few English sports cars before (Healey's & MG's) I'm putting a layer of 6mm felt down first with spray on carpet adhesive. Not too thick or heavy and gives you a nice even surface to work to.
http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-986-felt.aspx You must have companies supplying this stuff in the States. |
I wonder if a portable steamer would work/help?
Someone posted a 'steam cleaner' for cheap a while back... |
If anyone needs the RS carpet installation guide I can email you a copy in PDF format.
It is a pictorial guide from Appbiz. PM me. |

I'm considering Dynamat for my car. I have permanent tinnitus (ringing in the ears). The idea of putting Dynamat in my car is to reduce the cabin noise... The exhaust note of my car seems to exasperate my problem. I would gladly sacrifice a few pounds so I can drive my car in comfort. The question is does it really make a difference? Is your car much quieter with Dynamat? |
In my case (first picture), the smooth carpet is due to the layer of Thermotech FR that I put under the carpet. I cut sections of the thermotech to fit. The carpet is Appbiz plush. Even with some sound deadening and carpet, it was still a good weight savings.

I would think that any closed cell foam would work but how do you secure the carpet to the foam neatly? |
I'm about to do this too so I want to subscribe to this thread. I think in the AppBiz directions it says something about using a thin synthetic pad that you can get at Home Depot as a base, which will help to iliminate the bumps.

Don911, beautiful job on the interior! Is the thermotech FR heavy? |
there is a thread where people discuss which 3M spray adhesive to use -- most seem to like the 3M
of course, then there's Swepco.... |
