Question Can I modify 3.2 SSI to fit 3.0 Exhaust Ports?

Can I modify 3.2 SSI to fit 3.0 Exhaust Ports?

I recently purchased a set of used thick flanged SSI's at a discount. I am in the process of changing out the Exhaust Studs.

The sleeves that are in the SSI flanges are to big (38mm) to fit in my (35mm) exhaust ports.

Enträtseln Sie mich dieser Batman...

Is it ok to just cut the sleeves off?

Should I use original style copper centered gaskets?

I understand that the sleeves are a modification to keeping the gaskets from blowing out.

Mahalo,

Shane

Have you measured the sleeves? My understanding is that the sleeves are the same width for both the 3.2 cars and the 3.0 litre, being 35mm for both, and that the only difference is that the 3.2 SSI sleeves are chamfered on the inside, whereas 3.0 SSI sleeves are chamfered on the outside. Therefore I think if you put longer exhaust studs in your cylinder heads then the 3.2 SSIs should bolt just right up complete with sleeves. I don't know for sure though - maybe someone else will chime in to confirm this.

Just went out and measured the sleeves they are 38mm OD the 3.0 ports are 35mm.

I thought the same thing as you when I bought these.

I dont think it will be an issue to cut them I just wanted to see if anyone elso had done this, I did a search and didn't come up with anything.

You can remove them, you'll also need longer studs.

Almost done with the stud change out, I am working on the last one now. Thanks for the comments I am going to go cut the sleeves off now, I should have this thing back together by morning sometime.

Ben,

Have you got any caps done? I probably will need one.

Woody,

Thanks so much for the stud tool, almost done with it.

I'm going to do the tunnel tour 09;

Pali-Likelike-H3 Wilson.

Looks like I am not going to finish up tonight I spent a lot of time with a dull hack saw cutting off the sleeves.

First thing tomorrow I am back at it, one more stud to drill out.

My Wife found the receipts...its not good.

Is it not possible you to change your ssi with someone who has this part dedicated for 3.0 liters ????

Knowing the price of ssi , that would makes me cry..........

Nope, not possible, I am on an island in the middle of the Pacific not a lot of people want to suck up the cost of shipping to do a trade. Wipe the tears away, they will still work with a 3.2, no issues, if it makes you feel better I will recycle the cut off sleeves.

Got it Ben, they are just laying on there so I could get a look at it together. Sorry for the bad publicity, I'll take a better pic when it's all together and buttoned up tight.

Thumbs up All Done

OK... I'm done, just back from a short test-drive that ended up lasting an hour in the rain. Wow! my life just got funner... this makes my radio obsolete...loud, race car loud, I like it but I think I will need a cap, Maybe two caps

Ben,

are there any extensions or inserts that can quiet it down a bit? I'm not complaining, I love the sound, but in consideration of others.

Borrow my megaphones, then that M&K will sound positively tame in comparison

Shane thanks for stopping by, your car sounds killer and if I'm not mistaken, feels equal to or better than my Carrera. Throttle response with the PMO's is very snappy. Good job

Thanks Tommy,

That truly means a lot coming from you, It is a tad bit loud but everyone seems to love it, it gurgles on decel, I am going to get in trouble with this thing, we need a track...bad.

I am going to tune the carbs a bit better this weekend, I checked the valves and they were in spec but sometimes I get a popping from the exhaust on decel.

And immediately after I shut the motor off it gurgles twice, its the same way every time, like its saying thank you, whats that about?

WPOZZ whats the status on the track?
