86 3.2 idle

Has anyone had this problem, When idling my 86 911s idle will surge from normal ilde to about 1300rpm then drop back to normal sometimes it will completly die, it does not matter if it is hot or cold and sometimes it wont do it at all. I took it to a pcar man but of corse he could not get it to do it. Any help would be great.

I had a problem like that. My Idle was just a touch too high. Are you familiar with adjusting the idle speed.

There are numerous possibilities: vacuum leak, bad O2 Sensor, and a host of others. Do a search for "hunting idle" and start with the stuff that's free.

I sometimes had this with my prior 86. The mixture was the issue with mine. It was set a bit rich. Besides the possibility of the idle being misadjusted, the Idle Stabilization Valve might also be defective. That can be cleaned. Lots of thread on this general and common issue. Can be caused by a few things.

I had a surge in the idle more often than not. O2 sensor, replaced the oil filler cap and gasket and really helped out but still did it every once and a while. Installed Steve Wong chip and followed his instructions to adjust idle (can be found on his web site). Haven't had a problem since even with AC running.

idle surge

I have 86 carrera and found te right side intake manifold gaskets leaking spray carb cleaner at the bases for the intake runners to the heads and see if idle goes up if so the gaskets are leaking once removed you could see the gasket material was all wet.
