Tach Rotation
 

This is a pretty simple question but figured I'd ask ones who have done it before as I have not. How complicated and difficult is it to rotate the tach in my 69 912. Any steps or advice on the best way to do this would be appreciated. -JWK

I can't comment on a 69 912, but for my SC, it was very simple. Gentrly pull the tach out, rotate to desired position and pop back in. Took me all of 5 minutes.

Do you mean just physically twist the gauge in the dash (easy) or rotate the face so it displays within the steering wheel? North Hollywood Speedo can do the in-dial rotation:

Yours has been stuck in place for 40 years.:eek: Take a long pole with a soft end and work it between the wiring to get @ the back side of the tach. Gently tap around the circumfrence of the tach @ 120 degree intervals from inside the trunk until you sense it pop loose;).

Shouldn't be too difficult since they are just pushed into place, although that dash looks like it has been touched in the past 40 years, very nice. Interesting design of the numbers where the red-line is at the 12 o'clock position.

What's wrong with it anyway, it looks factory correct?

Opps, sorry Johndglynn, your dash looks very nice and I see why you wouldn't want to rotate it.

If I recall correctly, your 69's gauges are held in place from the back side with clips and thumb screws (the rubber rings we all know and love didn't start until 70), so before you try this take a look at the back of the gauges from the trunk area and verify how they are held in place...

There should be 2 thumb screws and clips per gauge. Loosen them and the gauge will turn in its hole in the dash. But be careful as there is a thin rubber sealing ring between the gauge and dash that is probably quite dried out and brittle. I would hesitate to turn the gauge in place... probably safer to pull it out far enough to get a good look at the rubber seal, then turn it/rotate it and place it back in the desired location.

Ive had a couple '69 912's and the above post is correct. They don't just pull out. You have to reach in from the trunk and remove fasteners from the back. You may have to remove some defroster hoses to get at them.

Seems i remember my 912 speedometer had a glass face when i took it apart. That was over 20 years ago so I'm not sure though.
