I thought the MacPherson required a coil spring on the strut, and thus the 911 was a derivative of its own. Since I learned something new today, I can go home now!

Actually, most have a coil spring on the strut. However, for the space considerations, PAG decided to use torsion bars. Using the strut/shock as a control/locating element of the suspension is what differentiates it from other suspension designs. It has its advantages and disadvantages.
