A stupid question about NUT DIAMETER
 

Okay, fellas. So, I like nice shiny nuts. (Go right ahead, you comedians.)

For example, on my (pulley housing motor mount thing), theres FOUR 10mm studs and

When disassembling, I took off a wave washer and a 10mm nut,

The nuts I took off took a 15mm socket.

If, when I put on some SHINY NEW NUTS, (go ahead)

Assuming I get good clearance is it ok that the new nuts I am using take a 17mm socket?

Of course, I realize the smaller diameter nuts provide significant weight savings.

Well why would you risk it for a thirty cent item ? My experience is it's always the "I didn't think of that" that gets you in trouble.. Like when I sub'd a non stock snap ring in my tranny ( go ahead ask why I'm hanging with a tranny",,,
Seriously , why are they so much bigger ? They look like the low cost soft metal ones you'd get with your lawnmower ... bigger to get equal strength?

Bigger is better, go ahead and use them, no big deal as long as there is room. Its only the outside anyhow. Maybe at the factory they didn't want to keep changing sockets all the time.

Our 912 carbs used a 12mm that fits a 8x1.25 stud, Try to find one of those!

All the bolts/nuts I"m using are 8.8, so I don't think strength is a problem.

If you really like nice shiny nuts, then you will order the exact correct replacement new ones. Who cares if you never get to drive the car...

I wish I could be a rockstar so I was rich and cool enough to be able to change nuts just because they're not shiny enough...

As long as the new nuts don't interfere with any structural aspects, then use them. Usually, undersized nuts and/or bolts are used when there's going to be interference.

Well, the PET doesn't specify the O.D., but the listing for the spring washer is 10 x 18. So . . . . I'm assuming a 17mm O.D. nut is what they wanted in the first place.

AND, considering some of the 'other' surprises I found when taking my engine down to the long block, I bet the last guy just threw on whatever spare nut he could find that would fit. I bet 17 is what's supposed to be there.

And, HEY!!!! spending an extra $50 for BRAND NEW SHINY NUTZ is worth it, IMO. Its my visual indicator that I've been ON DOZE NUTZ and found the torque spec and TIGHTEND UP DOZE NUTZ proper. Word. To your mom.

Im still trying to figure why my toolset has a 16mm open/box. I guess it just fills the spot between 15 and 17

I replaced all my nuts with new 17mm's. There are some nuts that hold the tanny to the engine that are easier to get off when they're 15mm, but other than that there shouldn't be a problem.

The originals are actually the 15mm size.
You can get them over the counter at AAA Metric, here in town, for a few cents each.

There are a few places on the 911 motor that use "reduced wrench size" nuts. Off the top of my head; one (or more) of the nuts holding the transmission onto the motor and the nut inside the fan belt cover/engine bracket console.
8mm nuts usually use 13mm wrench (12 mm is reduced wrench size)
10mm usually use 17mm wrench (15mm is reduced wrench size)

I'd save the nuts you removed just 'cause they aren't readily available.

I did not even have a 16mm for many years. I hade to buy one to work on my El Camino. I have never seen a 16mm on a Porsche.

I didn't have any 13 or 15mm, I've been working on Japanese vehicles for so long. I've probably lost more 13mm and 15mm that some people have ever owned!

And I had to go and rebuy them once I got the 911...rotten stinking goofy Kraut engine grumble grumble...

Now yer telling me I gotta buy a 16mm too?? I'll just use a crescent wrench for that one :D

if you want them nice and shiny (your nuts and bolts) have them cadmium (sp) plated for a cool gold look

They are 15. The car is only original once. What is the headmark on them?

Substitution of nonoriginal parts makes the Porsche G_ds angry. They will probably take it out on your left front wheel bearing.

I know they're supposed to be 15, but If the Porsche Gods saw this car, 15mm nut diameter on my pulley cover/motor mount would be sooooooooo far down on the list. Like oh man, soooooooooooo far.

I popped for the nut/bolt kit that Pelican sells. I'm sure it is more than you can source fasteners for, but I was doing a lot of travelling while trying to build my engine and the convenience was worth every penny. I believe these were part of it.
