Oil thermostat re-install

What could be giving me grief, making re-installation of my oil thermostat difficult?
The removal was uneventful, I kept the well and engine surface clean, R&R'ed the oil ring, and put clean oil on a clean thermostat - but she seems to balk, and I don't want to force it.

It is not even going all the way down to the O-ring, and in fact, I have the most problem just getting it started. I can't figure it out!
The t-stat isn't keyed, and the holes/ports are lined up properly.

Could the body be this sensitive to temperature? - garage was cold last nite but stat was out less than hour.

any help'd be appreciated.

no foolin' - the sucker is tough to start.

Would light tapping w/a rubber mallet hurt?

It's out in the garage ready to go.
Any ideas?

You know it only goes in one way, right? Check to see the holes in the top are going to line up with the studs.

Check - one way - holes line up with ports, and mounting holes are aligned with studs. It is literally the FIRST INCH that has me stuck.

It's not like I dropped and warped the thing either - oh bugger.

IT'S IN!!
I stuck it in the freezer last nite (oiled and in a clean ziplock bag).
It was exposed to the air for maybe 3 seconds before I got it positioned and it slid right in.
