901 trans for a 72
The slow economy can cause some whacky ideas to come forth. I have a 72 sportomatic car and would like to change to a manual-alas, insufficient funds available. I do have a 901, which seems fine. I have assembled all the bits and pieces to do the conversion with a 915, but no 915. The fit of the 901 seems ok, and the speedometer cable and throttle linkages will work. The throwout arm and the electrical connections are more problematic. I am not sure if its a push or pull type throwout. The 901 has a small electrical pigtail, while the sporto has 2- 4 pin connectors. Anyone with helpful thoughts out there? And yes, I promise to redo it with a 915 ASAP. Thanks.

I can't answer all your questions, but I can tell you that a 1972 915 (first year of it) has the same throwout/clutch cable connection as the late 901s - no helper spring, and it's a pull-type connection. Which is why I was completely baffled by the 915 clutch adjustment method in 101 Projects!

an early road-racing type transmission in a '72 oil door is 2 of the 3 steps towards the ultimate 911
and yes it can be done -- forget the 915 unless you really need to handle some xtra torque first, are you sure you have a 901, and not a type 911 trans.? |
