Many threads on this. |

If you ever sell your car it will be easier if you can offer the unmolested OEM bars as part of the deal. Stock bumpers weigh about 16 kgs each. (30 lbs) Fibreglass are about 3 to 4 kgs... (7 to 8 lbs) |

I'm stuck in this zone right now, just bought a completely OEM 88' and want to make tasteful modifications (read improvements), but if I sell it in the future I want to be able to market a completely original/stock car, by offering both the mods and original parts in the sale etc., which WILL be desirable. All that said, the stock bumperettes, especially the US ones are obnoxious on the impact bumper cars. Porsche gets an 'F' for those, as well as the stock steering wheel. These cars pictured above look SOOOOOOOO much better! |
I have every part I have taken off my complely original 87(when purchased)....and nothing I have done cannot be undone. I filled the holes in my bumper with fiberglass and body filler...all it will take is about 30 seconds with a drill to open the holes back up....but I don't plan on selling my car in the near future. As far as my muffler is concerned...thanks for the comments. I have a fiberglass valance that I will be adding as soon as the paint arrives...the muffler will be hidden for the most part...but the exits will be quite noticeable.

I started out on the "Don't do anything that can't be undone" route when I built my IROC-look '83 SC, but I ultimately realized that not in my lifetime or even my daughter's is that thing going to be anything but a used car, never a collectible. There were simply too many made, too many around, not broadly desirable or iconic enough. I gave up that silliness and then cut metal here and there. I still have all those original parts--yes, including the bumpers--in a friend's barn, but if I ever sell the car, which I probably won't, I doubt the buyer will want them. He or she will want that neat-looking lowered car with the wing and air dam and fat tires and loud exhaust, not some museum piece.
And if a 25-year-old 911 is just a used car, certainly a 20-year-old one is. |

I took my bumper pads off for two reasons. One being that they do date the car and the other is the drivers side pad was sagging and looked like doggie-doo. Was all rusted out. |

Whoa whoa whoa, nobody had used the "I" word (investment) in this thread, and I for one certainly hadn't intended to imply the idea. However, I bought, and wanted, a stock vehicle. I subscribe to the idea that you can make nice mods/improvements while keeping an unmolested appearance, without starting in on the car with a torch. Removing the bumperettes, for example, is in keeping with the stock design, yet shows a well thought improvement. If my "design criteria" was to create an RSR, well then hand me the saw and stand back.
