Motor dies when I open tank to check oil
 

I've had six 911s since my first '68 911L. As I recall, that with all of them I checked the oil level with the motor idling by reading the dipstick.
I haven't driven my '80SC w/3.6 964 transplant very much in the last ten years, but when I try to check oil level with the motor idling, the motor dies as soon as I remove the oil tank cap. What up, is this normal or am I missing something! Is this a quirk of the 3.6 motor or is something amiss.

Sounds like you are missing the necessary restrictor in the hose connecting the oil tank to the intake system. This creates a vacuum leak that kills the engine.

Its a $20 part and will fix your problem. :)

I've looked at the oil hose section on our host's parts pages, and can find no restrictor listed, just the hoses. Where would I find this $20 part?
When I installed the 3.6 motor, I just hooked up the hose from the 3.6 to the existing "80SC oil tank.

until you get the restrictor you can clamp it with a pair of pliers or a vice grip to keep it from stalling.

from the parts layout on pelican for the SC it looks to be 930 107 289 00.

It goes in the line that runs from the oil filler neck to the intake (not the one that goes from the crank case breather to the oil tank). On a 3.2, the part number is 930-107-289-00.

It sure fixed my car, thanks again for the "e-diagnosis" on Butters, Steve! Can't believe that little missing piece would just flat make it stall when you pop the cap. Dang things must run on vacuum!

Once again you wonderful Pelicans came through! I was beginning to think Alzheimer's was clouding my long term memory about checking oil level! Just was sure the motor shouldn't die when removing tank cap, but was starting to doubt my memory. Big thanks!

Not to be a pain but what is the big deal with flogging people that someone assumes didn't try the search feature to deal with their question? Maybe he did search and didn't come up with the right phrase to narrow down the results enough or hit exactly his topic. Assuming this service has been up for several years wouldn't most all issues have been addressed at some point. What's then the point of asking anything? I for one appreciate the questions. It's interesting to see what's being asked and the answers come forth. I just don't get the constant harrassment by folks who aren't moderators telling people they shouldn't post their questions but then again I may be missing something :confused:

I put mine in on the end nearest the tank. I put it in small end first because it was easier to push in that way! Make sure it's in far enough that it allows you to properly reinstall the line.

When using the number 930-107-289-00 in the parts window, it brings up info for various models listing it as an "oil pump restrictor" for SC's '81 but as a "line restrictor" for other models.

Oil pump restrictor? Why would one restrict the oil pump?

Also, the diagrams (Pictures) are not clear about location?

The SC diagram shows it on the bottom of the tank. In the S-line maybe?
For other models, it shows it on top but also not very clear.

That's why I like this forum. I can just browse through the different threads to see what kinds of problems people are exepericing along with the solution.

If and when I have the same problem, a faint glimmer of memory may come on in my mind knowing what the solution is. Or perhaps I'll use the search button looking for this very thread.

It's one of those "whoddathunkit" problems. Unlike "how do I jack up my car?"
