Question One piece door glass

This one is not for the purists but, has anyone put one piece door glass in a 911? Like the ones used in VWs, El Caminos, and other cars/trucks? The fixed vent is useless and I think it would give the car a cleaner, leaner look.

I think it would look great. A bit of difficult engineering to keep the window in only one channel. The glass would most likely have to extend a ways into the door even when fully closed in order to have a small channel in the front.

I needed to keep my vent windows in order to attach my 935-style morrors. I guess I'm not much of a purist, either.

I would love something like this. You are correct that the current vent does nothing and does take away from the cars clean lines

We looked at this briefly years ago and the forward section of the door would have to be extensively modified to allow room for the motion the glass takes when being lowered. The check strap area is where the problem area lies. The glass does not move straight up and down; it travels forward following the curvature of the rear edge of the door

In the case of VW, the door stoppers had to be discarded because they interfered with the glass when closed. One time I learned that the hard way, the glass got into thousand particles!

I have been thinking about doing something similar, I just need to find an 'old' frame to experiment with. One thought I had was to not bother trying to get the window to go up and down but to create an idea similar to 935 sliding side windows. It may negate the clean look a little but it could look pretty cool? Old minis had this look also...

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Chris

There is a place that may be still doing these, if his personal problems have been handled

Funny, I was thinking about the same idea.

But, I was thinking of using something like the Boxster mirror mount to replace the vent window and provide a track for the window.

This would work.... But 911 windows are curved. That makes it about 400% harder to do properly.

I did this years ago on a Fiat 500. I had the glass custom made to fit. I provided a template made from a sheet of 2mm aluminium. But the windows on a Fiat 500 are flat (so are VW Bettle windows).
