Stupid I filled oil on an cold engine and it smokes how do I get rid of the oilsmoke?
Damn I am so stupid, I filled oil on my 68 911 while the engine was cold and took it for a drive on the freeway to find the engine compartment covered in oil when I came back.
![]() I cleaned it all up, and it looks dry and nice now, but when the car idles after I run it on the freeway, thick white oil smoke appears from the cylinders and people think the car is on fire. The fan has draw oil into the fan housing when I drove it with to much oil, and I assume it is stock between the cylinder heads or something? How do I get rid of the nasty oil smoke, I know it will go away with time, but I really need it gone quick, any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Damn I was so stupid how could I forget rule nr. 1 ![]() |

How 'over full' is it? You might need to drain a litre or two out of the tank and run it until it is warm and you can verify the oil level by the dipstick. Then add / remove accordingly. It will still smoke for a while so give a bit of 'welly' and drive it at night to burn off the oil in the exhaust system.

Just be sure you suck out the extra oil from the top through the fill tube, or wait until its cold... unless you want to drain the entire tank... impossible to get the drain plug back in while hot oil is rushing out. Dont ask me how i know that....

the engine doesn't really burn much of it. it just gets blown into the muffler and heat burns it out eventually. either do a midnight cruise until it stops smoking or remove the muffler and have it hot tanked and/or steam cleaned. run it with the muffler off for a short time until the exchangers run clean.

just get your oil level right and go drive the hell out of the car. I over filled the oil in my SC and found alot of oil in the airbox under the filter. I cleaned it out with alot of rags. My car looked like it was a mosquito truck but the smoke eventually went away.
If you are adventurous (sp?), you could always pull out the fan/alternator housing and clean up in there as well. I have a feeling that it might be easier just to let the oil burn itself off. I wouldnt spray any thing into the fan simply because the alternator is right there behind the fan.

the heat exchangers just get oil in the exhaust pipes that run through them, not in the heater shell normally. that burns out pretty quick. i suppose if oil is drooled all over the top of the engine and runs down through the heads and cylinders and covers the exchangers, then some could seep in through the space between header pipes and shell and stink up the heater system.
