Ugh, the smell of burning popcorn
82 911sc. Went to take the kids out for a ride on this nice NJ day, hadnt driven the car in about a month. Get about 1mi down the rode and my daughter starts telling me she smells burning popcorn. Sure enough, turn around, get the car home, open up the engine lid and the lovely smell and smoke engulf the garage.
Smoke seemed to be bellowing from upper right hand corner of the engine. Looking for some ideas on what it could be. Didnt see any new oil leaks, or issues from underneath the car. Took it back out again a little while later, drove it slowly around the neighborhood, everything seemed fine. Took the kids back out, got the car up to speed and more burning popcorn smell. The heat pad is half off already, maybe its that, some mice, bugs, leaves, something internal? |

If you have any history of mice in or around your garage it would be wise to pull the alternator/fan assembly loose to make sure none have taken up residence on top of the motor, that is a quick way to overheat a cylinder or two.

better remove the fan housing and check inside over the cylinders and oil cooler for debris. good way to overheat the engine if the critters packed crap in there, and they do.

Come to think of it, squirrels actually did knock down bird feeder, wife brought it into garage, dropping the food all over the floor. Orville Reddenbacker would not be very happy to have his popcorn flavored with the taste of engine oil.
Will have at it this weekend, maybe i'll move the cat into the garage permanently. |

white smoke pouring from over top of rear passenger tire, and thru the right side of the interior dash vents. oh my. not sure if its rodents or something worse. |

Temps were all fine, removed fan housing a few weeks ago and couldnt see a thing back there, and everything seemed to clear up, unless the rodents filled it back up.
could it be any guess guess i could try removing fan housing again, any suggestions on how to keep them out for good. |

![]() ![]() Mothballs spread around the engine comp't help a lot to keep them away. Don't store cat food or dog food in the same garage as the car. It attracts the mice. Tape over the exh & intake openings also helps. Use dried mint leaves for the inside of the car front & back. Easy to vac up in the spring & has a nice smell when on that first run of the season. Of course good advice for next winter, a bit late for this. Len ![]() |
