H4 Conversion for newbie
Couple of questions for all.. I am looking at doing the H1 - H4 conversion.. I see some selling parts that are going back to H1. 1. Why would you go BACK to H1 unless you want completely stock. 2. Does anyone sell an entire kit bulb, ring, cover , relay, seal etc.. or do you have to buy ALL the parts? 3. Where is the the best place to buy, and which BRAND is better (Bosch-Hella) Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Perhaps I can help. 1) The H1's were a unique lamp assembly and offered much better illumination for the period. Some people simply want to install the top option of the day. ![]() 2) One can buy H4 headlight assemblies brand new but they don't include bulbs, the paintable trim rings, new seals, etc. Everything is generally sold "ala carte" so one can simply buy what you need. H1's are long out of production and used ones command big prices. 3) These 911-specific headlamp assemblies are ALL made by Bosch.

Price was south of $300 for the set. Talk to Al at Parts Heaven in Hayward, CA. He and his staff have always been more than helpful. HTH

You don't say what car, but also note that you can install Euro H-4s, which come as a complete unit, and can also replace the 7" sealed beam headlights that were part of the "sugar scoops" original to the 60s, 70s and early 80s 911s in the US with what looks just like a 7" sealed beam but has a replaceable H-4 bulb plugged in from the back.
Both are significant upgrades. Our host offers both.
