...Sad to say I just saw a guy at a gas station with his nice late 80's all black Targa with the engine shut off, suit and tie, checking the oil. I honestly felt bad for the car, and almost pulled over just to offer help. BTDT. No owners manual and a lack of knowledge in my case lead to a massive overfill. Everyone needs to learn somehow.

I always check my oil with the engine off.
All you have to do is make sure it has fully warmed up. Pop the lid, turn the key off, and check the stick with no worries of getting anything caught in the fan. (I've verified that the level is correct many times by checking it with the car on, turning it off, and checking again - always the same). Just don't give the oil time to settle.

Maybe he didn't want to get his tie caught in the fan blades? Could be quite a tradgedy. By the way, you should also avoid working on your lathe while wearing a tie. Just a lil advice.

Guys who use lathes don't have an excuse NOT to remove their wedding bands.
