MSD Coil melted
Today I notice an ideling problem and some surging while driving.
Looking under the hood I saw the coil wire was arcing. Closer look at it the coil wire and the top of the coil are melted. What caused this to happen? What's the solution? |

coil
Is the coil mounted vert. ? I have seen the MSD coil wires not fully pushed down in the tower whereas the arc jumps and creates alot of heat andarcs thru the tower to the primary connections

Something arced and you got an intermittent ground short. It heated up and melted. Replace it, check wiring for cracks and burn marks.

Yes the coil is mounted vert.
I also read that the coil is 8mm opening and the wire is 7mm which causes the connection to be loose and not make solid contact causing arcing if not a tight fit. I was thinking of replacing the coil with the taller tower one for better contact. |

tower fit
If you verify that the brass coil wire end fits down into the tower tight sometimes you have to "bleed " the air out of the boot so to speak by using a dull small screwdriver or the like to release the air out as you push the boot on, because it will try to push the connection apart and there starts the arcing.

I had the same problem with the MSD Blaster coil. The fix for me was an 8MM plug on the stock 7MM wire or a 7MM plug on an 8MM wire, I can't remember. Either way, I think your cap is 7MM and your new coil is 8MM. Easy enough to confirm. Although you could open the 7MM plug with a screwdriver, I found that not to be the optimum solution to prevent arcing.
Sealing the boot with dielectric grease and bleeding the air as described is a good idea for a watertight fit and easy disassembly in the future. |

It's welcome to have Mike's experience and patience
My 8.5 Magnacores snap nicely into the MSD Blaster SS coil. The boot is tight but not as bad as the Magnacore boots into the Bosch dizzy cap. On that issue I took the new wires and attached them to a spare cap and used a hair dryer to kinda loosen them up by hand molding them. It made dealing with the new boots doable. The pin connection into the cap is pretty tight and care for me to remove. This is mounted on the elec panel with those optional rubber feet. I use the optional long Magnacore wire for connect. ![]()
