Speedo advice

Gents, the speedo works but only after I tap it with my finger, the odometer has not worked for over a year. Can you advise if the speedo on my 87 Targa is cable or electrical, I have not yet removed it, thanks.

Your speedo is electric. Mechanical speedos ended during the 1976 model year.

If you're a man you should never wear a speedo.

Hope that helps.

I know there are several places to send the speedo out to be reconditioned but should I try to repair it myself?

There is an electrical sender/switch accessible on the outside of the tranny. It an be easily removed and tested before spending on a speedo rebuild.

Lenny, there is a plug in the shift tunnel you disconnect then remove the bolt that holds the switch itself into the drivers side of the tranny. It's a simple mechanical switch that you can trigger with by holding a magnet to it and checking the circuit for continuity at the plug with your multimeter as you move the magnet on/off. Two man job if you leave the switch on the car while you test it.
