Replacement dash for 1972 911S

Does anybody repair/restore old dashboards? I am doing a full resto on a 1972 S and it has the typical split in the dash at the center. The only replacement dashes I can find are bust out $1300 pieces from Stoddard or Pelican.

Is there a cheaper alternative, or do I just need to pay this? I've looked everywhere for a clean used one to no avail (expecially an early one with no vents and the center speaker grill).

thanks for any leads on this -

Pete

How bad is the dash?

I just saw an old thread where one of the Pelicans did his own repairs using vinyl epoxy and vinyl paint. He posted detailed instructions and lots of pictures. Came out looking pretty cherry. You may want to do a search...

A dash is something you have one chance to get right when restoring a car and you look at it every moment you are in the car. If a T or even an E, I'd recommend a leather recover. For an S, I'd go with one of the Stoddard replacements, even though they don't fit quite right and require some massaging. If I had the means, I'd try to find a rare "authentic" NOS dash that's been in storage for 20+ years, even though they typically bring $3000 when offered for sale.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I will look into autobahn interiors and the 928 leathershop.

I did hear that the Stoddard dash needs some tweaking and Pelican says the same thing on their dash listing.

I have gone to tremendous pains to do a stock resto from cutting out some shoddy rear flares, staying with the original silver paint and finding a set of Fuchs that were date matched to the car. I guess I will just pay the $1300 unless the guys that recover the dash can make it look totally stock.

Some pics attached - freshly painted and motor is ready to go:

Send your dash to Tony at Autobahn Interiors. Your car deserves the perfection that Tony produces.

Fit is perfect since it would be your original dash.

I have seen some discussion of these guys on some previous threads. http://www.dashboardrestorations.com/ Might be worth talking to them. Not sure it would be much cheaper than the $1,300 replacement, but if it is done right it would be worth it.

Beautiful car. The Silver paint looks fantastic!

The car deserves a nice dash. Do what it takes... Try to find an original first. I have one from Tony in my car; it has a seam which an original would not. It doesn't bother me.

This one is available. Fresh Tony/Autobahn Restored Dash and Speaker Grille. Beautiful job. The difference from original is a VERY slight difference in the vinyl texture. There is a sewn seam running down the crevice on the top. It looks classy and is not very visible. I know it fits perfectly because it came out of my '70 911E. It has not been installed since I got it back from Tony. I would want $975 outright including shipping. I would prefer this dash to a new one I have to cut to make it fit. Contact me at KinderSport@gmail.com if you would like more photos.

Thanks,
Scott

Tony did mine - as well as a few other pieces for my 72. I highly recommend him.
