Toggle switch above rear view mirror

I have a 1984 911 Targa once in a while driving i hear a motor kick on i cant duplicate it, it just happens. what is the black rubber coated toggle switch above the rear view mirror between the sun visors. when i use that i believe that is the noise I hear. I thought it might have been for a sun roof or top for another model but its hooked up and working something.

thanks for the help!

I don't believe that is a stock switch. You don't have a 964 tail added on and that switch raises the spoiler in the back?

I have an '84 as well. (Sunroof coupe) When I bought the car, the PO said it was there to measure and adjust the temp Inside the car...? I haven't look closely at it, not sure if mine is a toggle switch. I do know it doesn't have anything to do with the sunroof, that switch is under the dash...

Thats a good point it could be the temp sensor, the rubber cover does have holes around it.

thanks

if you have auto heat, I think it's the temp sensor. My father-in-laws '85 Targa has the same thing. I think a while back we finally decided it was the temp sensor.

Yes there is a temperature indicator sensor up there for cars with auto heat. But it certainly is not a switch.

I think your right it is temperature it definetly operates a motor some where.

thanks again for everyones help.

Yours is different than the set up on my '86, but it probably works the same. There is a small aluminum box with a motor under the dash that has a fan in it that pulls the air in from the sensor. It may be that motor that you are hearing. Or it could be the motor in the auto heat box between the seats that moves the operating rod to open and close the heat flapper boxes.

That indeed is your temp sensor.

The noise you hear are the motors on the flappers on the heat ducts being adjusted open or closed to maintain the number/temp that you have selected on the rotary switch between the seats.
