Is it better to buy a 70s backdated car THEN put a bigger 3.0/3.2/3.6 motor?

OR...

buy an 80s car and do the bodywork?

Given this market there are a number of options. TIA.

Buy an 80s car... And backdate the body work.

That way the mechanics and drive train are newer and you can focus on the "look" of the car only.

A lot of 70s cars are getting tired. A good 70s car will always be more expensive compared to a good 80s car... (total cost of ownership)
A lot of mechanical parts for 70s cars are getting harder to find... :-)

I sort of thought that would be a recommendation. I have a friend who may sell his 88 Carrera coupe for in the mid teens so I may pull the trigger and backdate.

If you ever plan on racing the car look at your local clubs rules before you make a decision...

I agree with sc_rufctr that it would be cheaper to backdate a carrera/sc. In Texas I don't think you have to worry about being smog exempt like in California.

I doubt I'll go racing officially. I'd like to get it as a weekender and the ocassional trackday.

Current market will allow you to find complete examples of both types. An early car that was hot rodded or a backdated car. You will be getting a deal either way you go because the cars cost more to build then to buy!

If I had to build, I would get an early car and stick the motor in it. Strictly based upon my personnel preference. If you truly don't care I would also assume that backdating bodywork would be the easier way to go unless you commence an undertaking such as MarkSGTV's 78. IMO, backdating also will provide you with a more mechanically reliable car minus the rust issues of pre-77.

Another option is to buy one that someone has already done. Often if it is close to what you want it may be significantly cheaper than doing it yourself. Of course you may just enjoy the project. I know I do.

I have often thought about backdating my 930. I love the mechanicals of the 930 but love the looks of an early car.

I remember reading about someone backdating a 964. That would nice for the comforts but I've also read about the 'big block' 3.7 in a 72. Now that would be awesome.

88 has the G50... Do it!. :cool:

better depends on the values YOU assign to the differences

make list of the differences and decide which ones are really imp. to you.

e.g. fit of FG parts

body stiffnes

galvanizing/Thysson steel in unit body

etc.
