901 Gearbox on 3.0 motor?

Can a 901 gearbox be mated to a 3.0 SC engine? Is it a case of just changing the flywheel or is there more work involved?

Thanks in advance

You need a conversion flywheel, Kennedy Engineered Preoducts makes one. KEP is in Palmdale CA. The 901 can handle it, but be nice in first gear. Keep the burnouts to a minimum.

The 901 is used in the 914 and it's a common upgrade. But most will upgrade to a 915 after the 901 takes a dump.

I have an early 915 for sale if you are interested.

it probably won't last long before you have to replace the mainshaft double row ball bearing, at a minimum. not a lot of bearing support.

Mine's been working fine in my '70 for 4 years.

If you have the same tranny as me (for 1970 and 1971, technically called a 911 tranny), replace the pivot bolt for the clutch fork with a titanium one. I wish I had done so.

charlie, are you running a 3.0? i had a mildly rodded 2.7 in my old '69 and over 10 years or so, the trans was apart at least 3 times for wear issues, including the MS bearings.

I'm running a '78 3.0 with Webers and a 20/20 cam. The 3.0 replaced a pretty fast 2.7 with the same Webers. The car has been rodded with the original tranny since at least 1990, and the PO (Johannes van Overbeek) raced it exclusively. So, the tranny has done very well, considering. (Except for that incident with the pivot bolt, but that had nothing to do with HP.)

I have noticed big motors with hot cams that defer power production from the low wnd, tend to be nicer on the 901 than cars with soft street cams. For example, it seems the 901 will last longer on a 2.8 short stroke with RSR cams than a 3 liter with 964 cams (my only two points of comparison).
