72/73 barn find. What's it worth?

A guy has this for sale locally. what do you think it's worth?

It's listed as an early 73, all original except the seats and paint

But it looks like a 72 to me, in the one picture I can just barely see the oil filler door on the passenger side and there is no oil tank showing in the engine shot. It appears to be a Euro model, it has metric gauges and clearance lights. It has been stored and not run for 5 years but owner says it ran good before being stored.

That's all I know about it for now, what would be a fair offer?

Looking at the oil filter mount it must be a 72 i agree, also i see a Bursch exhaust and some aftermarket mirrors. Headlights and rear lenses are us but maybe he put them on the car later on. If the car runs and doesen't have too much rust 15-17K $ ?

The carbs also make it look like a euro motor. You need to get the VIN and engine type # before you can start to understand what you have on your hands

It's impossible to give you a value without examining the car in detail. There are lots of warning signs on this one.

The owner doesn't know what year car he has.
It has a bad (cheap, poor preparation) repaint, likely in a non-original color.
It's most likely a Euro car, so I'd bet there's a fair bit of rust under the paint.
It has been "updated" and that ususally happens to cars that aren't nice. Long story there.
Quite a few non-original parts, some hack wiring is visible.
The top needs work. Not cheap.
It hasn't run in years; not inexpensive to get back on the road, if done right.

It depends on what you want in the end but, if you want a really nice car, I'd look elsewhere. If you want to drive it as-is, I'd put the value well under $10k, and only after I had done a thorough inspection of the car would I make any kind of offer at all.

Good luck,
JR

-aftermarket alarm, indicates hack wiring and gremlins
-Ansa exhaust most likely rusted out
-Paint job - where to start - zero prep, changed to white from yellow, probably hiding some unpleasantness
-in the absence of a VIN and engine typ # to prove otherwise, this is a '72T. Either US spec with a carb conversion, or Euro model
-garbage aftermarket seats
-incorrect wheels and they look like they could be aftermarket junk
-'S' bumper missing seals, fits poorly, probably aftermarket junk (score though, if it is real)
-junk mirror

Assuming the interior is in about the same condition as the outside, plenty of $ to be spent there too. Am guessing the crappy bodywork is hiding some rust. If those guess prove to be true, then I'd be significantly under $5k on this car.

Follow all advice given above and proceed with caution. Locate and post the VIN and engine#s which will confirm if it is a Euro car. Absolutely, you must have a very close inspection for rust before you can even think about making an offer.

Some good points I noticed: Trim around the wheel wells is a fairly rare factory option and usually comes with the "S" front bumper which may indicate it is real and not fiberglas.

Carbs are typical for Euro 72's as are metric gauges--the VIN will confirm. Look for for a VIN something like, 911251XXX, with the 5 indicating a Euro car.

Clearly, the car has issues but, as stated before, decide what you are looking for, do a bit more investigating, report your findings back here, and proceed with caution. You may have found something worth your while.

IIRC, the 72 style oil tank was carried over to early 73 model year cars until the factory ran out of parts and bodies. Good luck.

What Javadog and DTW Said, plus the screw together, glass fuel filter is a Molotov cocktail waiting for an opportunity.

the wheels kinda look like early deep 7s. that would be nice if they were OE.

That was kind of where I was at on it... I'm having trouble contacting the owner, and they won't set a price. I think maybe they're either shy, busy, or paranoid to show the car as well as not knowing how much to ask.

The paint being what it is and with all the other issues, it just may not be worth restoring, not by me anyway. But it's worth going to look at I suppose.
I'll reply back when I have more info.

Thanks for all the advice and bargaining ammo!

If anybody else wants a shot at it, here it is:

When in doubt, part 'em out....

Uh, well... From the last email the owner sent me, I think that he thinks he's sitting on a goldmine or something in that ballpark.
He wouldn't give up any contact info so I could come look at the car, just wanted offers off the 3 lousy pictures I posted. So I politely emailed him back and told him that from what I could see I thought it might be worth $4k or maybe $5k max. His reply was "It's worth so much more than that!".

As far as I'm concerned he can keep it. I noticed it is still listed on the Northern Virginia Craigslist if you're interested, and it likely will be for a very long time....
