I love these cars finish
Took a break from garage work & spent a half hour waxing (yes 1/2 hour) my imperfect 911.... just makes me smile...

Beautiful.
Does anyone know when they first started using clear-coat paints? I don't think yours is clear-coated, is it? Original finish?

The metalllics are all clear coated. The solid colors have no clear coat at least through 1986.

I heard that the guards red cars had no clear until 1997. Does that sound right?

Compared to the air-cooled cars.....the 996's seem to all have terrible orange peel....not the quality of the earlier cars.
