Need for speed Porsche unleashed (revisited)

Someone mentioned this before...

It will hold you over during tough times. You really MUST have a forced feedback human interface device to get the full feel, preferably a steering wheel type rather than joystick. Logitech has one for around 100 bucks. It's very real; you feel oversteer, understeer, collisions, cobblestone roads, dirt roads.

What makes this game so brilliant? You get to literally drive all these cars and compare them. At some point, you get the opportunity to win a 550 spyder and in the process get to race one.
These things smoke any car made after them until the first 911. Hands down, those cars, according the the simulation, simply rule. Small, light, and fast.
This game has definitely put an ear to ear grin on my face all weekend.

Kurt I know what you mean. We bought my 15YO son (who's a Porsche nut by the way) the PC version of NFS Porsche Unleashed. It's a blast. Speed and handling are very realistic. Bummer that there isn't a '82SC to race though.

Adam 05-29-2001 03:44 PM

Kurt,

That game kicks soooo much ass!

I forget how many late nights I've been up, assembling my "Stable" of thoroughbreds!

The quick way to make cash is to buy beaters from the Used Car section. Fix em up and ask $5-10k over the going rate! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif

We should set up a tournament! The Pelican Parts Board Tournament!

I'm going to get some more racing time in in the coming weeks, then it'd be a good idea! I don't know how the online version is, but I'm in as soon as I get some competency at the thing.

MarkH 05-29-2001 06:48 PM

I too would be up for some online NFS:PU. It does seem like quite a big gap with the absence of the SC and 3.2L cars. I would say the fun-to-drive award is a toss-up between the 550 and the '73RS.

Oh yea, the Logitech wheel/pedal combo is a must for this game.

MarkH

needlevalve 05-29-2001 06:53 PM

Yeah that game is sooooooooo sweet! I agree must have force feedback wheel and a video card (PC).

Kurt, I too like the 550, but I find it a real tricky car to handle (way too much understeer). Have you developped a special technique to cornering with that car? Too bad no upgrades available for it.

Other must have car is old Moby herself. So many wicked cars!

I got this game the same week it came out, and with a steering wheel with floor-mounted pedals and a good video card it's a blast!

I know it's cheating ( http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif ), but... I downloaded a new character from a gaming site somewhere (can't remember where) so I could race ALL the cars at once! That GT1 rules - it's wicked fast!

At www.needforspeed.com you can download more cars then what come with the game! Too bad they don't have more of the 74-89 years. And a 917 would be sweet too...

This SUX..... I have tried this game on both of my pc's and it wont work on either. I have called support also. Bottom line, sorry.... (both are new P-III 800's with all the latest 3d cards etc.)

needlevalve 05-30-2001 11:13 AM

Rattlsnake, try downloading the patches that are available for it, might fix your prob. Does the game boot up and freeze, or does it fail to load? We run it on my mechanic's dyno computer and it's only a pIII 500 mhz.

You should have coughed up the extra cash for the Formula force GP, with the force feedback. The force feedback version is about $100, but comes with another racing game, Sports Car GT. Sports car GT is a road racing game with real tracks (Laguna Seca, Lime Rock, Road Atlanta, etc), and lots 911s.

Force Feedback is Awesome. Pretty realistic too.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoo

It doesn't want to work right. So far I had to restart my computer 5 times because it keeps getting messed up. At all different times, I would get a blue screen saying that it can't write to drive C or something. What should I do? Besides dropping the computer off a building.

Stray, is it doing this during installation?
Be sure to install the latest Direct X (available on www.microsoft.com) and should also be on the CD. DOn't give up hope, it sometimes takes a while to get it setup right (IT'S WORTH IT). It may be time to make friends with a puter nerd and invite him over this weekend to play NFS (after he gets it running for you).

Its already installed. The first time it did it was at the first loading screen with the pic of the title screen. The next time it did it was when I was changing the settings for my steering wheel. The next time it did it when I was setting up the track. The next time I actually did a quick race and when I went to start another one it did it again. I had to restart the computer every time it did it.

Stray, good news that it has actually run on your machine. That does generally mean that it can handle it.

Be sure you have the latest drivers for your video card.

Be sure you have LOTS of free space on your machine (the swap files are very demanding).

Be sure to download the latest patch for the game and unzip it to the folder where the game is installed (should be available here http://www.nfscheats.com/ ).

Be sure not to change the install path from where the installer initially wants to put the game.

Also try downloading some of the cheat patches that allow you to have as much money as you want etc. because they actually replace some of the files in the game directory (such as the exe) and sometimes smooth it out.

I would also suggest playing around with some of the rendering settings in the game such as quality of background etc. If you tone some of the settings down, you may find the game generally runs more stable.

Also, you can email the tech guys at EA with a description of the games behaviour. They will open an email dialogue with you and send you suggestions particular to your machine's configuration.

If all else fails, you will be forced to throw your computer from a tall building and get a new one. Think of how gratifying it will feel.

What OS are you running? That's one thing everyone over looked. If it's Win 2000... I wish you luck. I could never get it to work and EA doesn't support 2000.
Work great on Win 9X... it's a blast with force feedback. Extra fun when racing online.

needlevalve 06-01-2001 11:04 AM

Hey AGM, how do you find the game runs online? I always figured a LAN would be good but online may get a bit choppy.

I also love the game and all I use is the stinking keyboard. I bought a used MADCATZ steering wheel just to get a feel for it and I can't get it to work http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/frown.gif

Oh well at least I have the keyboard and my real 77 http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

If I get my wheel to work I would love to race online

Shawn

rattlsnak 06-01-2001 12:42 PM

Hey my version installed fine. When I start the game, I can get all the way trhough (picking cars, options etc.) until I click race. Then the screen goes black, the sound sticks, and locked up. I have tried toning all the graphics down, the sound, everything. Makes no difference. Interesting note, Needlevalve, you mentioned not changing the default install directory, Why ??

emcon5 06-01-2001 12:47 PM

I have played it online several times, and it works pretty well for me. The only problem I had was the force feedback quit on me halfway through a race 2 ir 3 times. I am on a cable modem, but based on the ping times shown, some of the guys I raced were obviousely on a dial-up connection.

From the way they drove, they didn't have any problems either.

Tom

needlevalve 06-01-2001 01:01 PM

Rattlesnak, sometimes when you change the game directories, it can cause conflicts with saved games etc, because the game is no longer at the default setup (which it may be looking for and cause a lock). I don't know whether this is your problem or not but it is something to try. This game is good, but very tempermental.

I had the exact same problem on a computer I was using (would lock into a sound loop and freeze) after 2 races every time. The problem waqs in the character I was using. The fix was to download the character editor program (allows you to tweek your characters: money, tracks etc.) and add a couple bucks to the character.

Good Luck!

needlevalve,

It works great online! I use a cable modem so the only time it slows down is when you have too many players racing at the same time. When you play with 1-5 people it's a blast.

Clark Griswald 06-01-2001 08:17 PM

Well you guys talked me into it. So today I picked up "unleashed" and a Logitech Wingman force feedback wheel.

I am not a big gamer, but I have to say the graphics and attention to detail are impressive. I have 8 foot projection system and surround sound so it was pretty immersive, especially the view from the driver's seat when you can see the dash.

But the cars never would rev above 4000 or so. What's up with that? I felt like I wasn't even into the powerband.

And the force feedback action should be about 300% more. I maxed out the configuration settings for this. You dont' really get much action until your hit something.

Are there some tweaks I need to make?

------------------
Chuck Moreland - '86 Cab, '77 Targa, Family Truckster

Kurt B 06-01-2001 08:22 PM

You need to tweek the feedback in the wingman settings, then launch the game. Also make sure the settings in the game for the forced feed back are high.
I actually had to reboot to get this to work right, not sure why. After you do that, you'll see it's working and the engine will shake your steering wheel, so then you'll tone it down in the game (I set my wingman to 150%).

Also, I have a problem with the fact that all the cars, no matter what I do to my car, blow me away off the line. In a straight line, floored, in 5th, they still pass me. Why are the computer cars always faster when we're all running the same mods? I don't get this...this part of the game is lame. I have to play catch up in every race.

emcon5 06-01-2001 08:58 PM

Chuck, Sounds like you you wheel isn't calibrated. I left my control panel settings at default, and then turned the feedback volume in the game up to about 60%. I turned off engine effects, put road grip at 100% and left everything else about in the middle.

I also had problems if my joystick was plugged in. It acted screwy, like it was getting conflicting input.

We really need to plan a Pelican NFS online racing session.

Tom

Mrdi 06-02-2001 06:49 AM

Would you guys please post the proper name of the game and the appropriate accessories?
Thanks,

emcon5 06-02-2001 08:50 AM

The game is called "Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed" and is published by Electronic Arts. It is about a year old, and can be found around here in the bargin bin of most software places for about $20. The official web page is here:

http://www.needforspeed.com/porsche/index.htm

There is a copy on ebay here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1241988394

The steering wheel and pedals I have, and am very happy with is the Logitech "WingMan Formula Force GP" Mine came packaged with a game called Sports Car GT. Details can be found here:

http://www.logitech.com/cf/products/productoverview.cfm/70

Microsoft also makes one that is supposed to be very good, but it costs more. Last time I saw, it didn't come with any games, but it may now.

David McLaughlin 06-02-2001 10:59 AM

From this point on, any game I create will be called Pelican BBS (hope that's ok Wayne?). I did so last night, but it wasn't overly popular, hopefully that will change. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif
BTW, I sign on as djm914-6 and my weapon of choice is a well modified (every option available) '73 RS.

Sorry bring this up again but ALERT.
For those of you who can't get full throttle using Wingman, go to deadzone, check your accelerator dead zone max limit (throttle all the way down). If it's not past the end of the bar, you can't get full throttle. But you can move the end bar (left one) in, thereby making the max travel in the axis shorter so that when the trottle is all the way down, you register past the end of the bar! (is that passed or past?, I think it's past, but I don't know, becoming i'norant in my old age)

Now, I know, this ain't a video game forum, but it was driving me nuts not getting full throttle and I remember someone else mentioning it!

stray15 06-06-2001 04:45 PM

How long did it take till you could play over the internet? I registered over 45 minutes ago and when I go to sign in it says my user name and/or password is incorrect.
