shop tachometer?
What are people using for tachs in the garage? I have the following meter below:
http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16155 Some kind of electrical interference from the ignition system makes the digital display fluctuate so much it's totally useless. On my other cars, I can usually route the red and black leads to avoid the interference, but it doesn't help on the 911. I haven't been able to check the timing because of this. Would an analog tach work better?

I just use the tach in the center of the dash.... its visible through the rear window..
Though performing timing exercise its nice to have a helper who will hold the car at 6000rpm while you check the timing marks.. I've checked timing solo peeking through the window...better to have a helper

The only thing is, the tach on my 914 isn't super accurate, so I assume my 911 is no better.

If your interested I have an extra tach (6 cyl) you could have for shipping costs... maybe wire it up with some alligator clips.. fwiw I have never been able to get a decent rpm reading, even on a high buck Fluke multi meter
